AI Strategy, as depicted by xAI’s Grok
Apple is reportedly seeking a new head of artificial intelligence as John Giannandrea, the company’s current AI chief. Giannandrea has purportedly led Apple’s AI strategy since 2018. The search for his replacement comes as Apple intensifies its attempt to catch up on Generative AI (GenAI) that blindsided the company.
Mark Gurman for Bloomberg News:
Apple Inc. is preparing to expand the roles of some top executives in response to the pending departure of longtime Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams, according to people familiar with the matter…
More executive changes are on the horizon at Apple, Bloomberg News has reported. The company is searching for a replacement for John Giannandrea, its artificial intelligence chief. And Lisa Jackson, head of environment and government affairs, is considering retirement.
Johny Srouji, who leads Apple’s chip division and recently launched the company’s first cellular modem, is also evaluating his future at the tech giant.
MacDailyNews Take: Better years late than never, we guess.
Apple pays and has been paying John Giannandrea, Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy, millions upon millions of dollars for years. WTF of any import does he really do? WTF of any import has he really delivered? Have you used Siri lately? Yup, it’s still a steaming pile of dogshit.
Where’s Apple’s generative AI, John? “Too hard; too late; look for partners; gimme my paycheck and stock options.”
AAPL shareholders need to start asking real questions of these executives, especially those who are supposedly in charge of Apple’s “AI Strategy,” when the company clearly has none. How about some accountability for once? – MacDailyNews, March 18, 2024

Either buy a company and give the acquired leader a lot of freedom or hire someone amazing and give them the same… Jony Ive level freedom and space to get stuff done. Anything else is a failure.
If Intel can make 3 nm or 2 nm chips (is Intel’s 1.8 nm worthwhile?) or has the hardware to do so, acquire Intel and give Shrouji the responsibility to run Intel in addition to his current responsibility. Shrouji is too important to let him go.
Getting Intel will give will allow Apple to get some captive capacity and Apple can either collaborate in R & D with TSMC or do her own R & D. At present Apple is too dependent on TSMC and the prices of TSMC’s 1.6 nm and 1.4 nm technology ICs is too high for Apple to use in her products, although the technology is ready. This is a PA Semi moment, except that the scale is huge because Intel is huge. I would have liked a small fabricating company for Apple to acquire but what is there is there. Finally it is Shrouji-Cook-Board to decide whether to acquire Intel or not.
I, personally, would let Apple acquire Intel and put Shrouji in charge it. It may become biggest ‘flop show’ in the world but the RISK IS WORTH TAAKING.
