  2. For anyone curious about the life of Steve Martin, this is an engaging, engrossing, and intimate 2-part documentary.

It’s a fascinating revelation of the man and the phenomenon he created with his approach to comedy. His parody of comedy, his suitcase of “stupid,” silly, buffoonish jokes, and wild physicality became comedy. You either got him, or you didn’t, but come Monday morning, all we wanted to do was him at school or work after he went viral via SNL.

By 1980, Steve had become the biggest stand-up comic in the history of stand-up. He bumped major rock stars out of the top slots with record sales in excess of 3.5 million albums. He was the first comedian to sell out stadiums. And then, he walked away from it all…into film.

The AppleTV+ documentary is nicely divided into two halves, titled “Then” and “Now.” Much of the “Now” is shot in my hometown of Santa Barbara. It was fun to see him and Marty Short strolling around town or wobbling along on bicycles when they weren’t sitting in Steve’s massive multimillion-dollar cement bunker of a home high in the hills of Montecito, pouring through jokes written for them on their comedy tour.

There’s a melancholy to Steve that he shares with Jerry Seinfeld, naming what we can already feel as the series reveals more of the emotional side of the 78-year-old’s life today. His father, Glenn Martin, a thwarted actor, seemed particularly cruel. Even at the height of Steve’s successes, his father was wont to say something belittling. In the midst of the massive success of “The Jerk,” Steve remembers him saying, “Well, he’s no Charlie Chaplin.” His father kept parenthood a film title and nothing more for Steve until his current wife, the 26-years younger Anne Stringfield, became pregnant. In 2012, at age 66, Steve became a dad and now dotes on Mary who is eleven today.

The documentary is well done and kept me up long past midnight as I couldn’t stop watching as more of the man was revealed.

Definitely worth a watch if you’re curious about the man with the arrow through his head.

  3. Quite a good banjo player to add to his comedic & acting skills and philosophy training.
Saw him decades ago–circa, “Let’s Get Small” record and Tour. Entered late into a small venue and walked the isle to the very front and sat on the floor. Came away with deeper appreciation and many good b&w pics…including a fine image of his arrow-thru-the-head prop.
