Here’s why there won’t be an iPhone 14 mini

According to Consumer Research Intelligence Partners (CIRP)’s U.S. iPhone sales data for calendar first quarter, the 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini continues to be wildly unpopular with customers, accounting for just 3% of total iPhone sales in America.

iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini come in five beautiful aluminum colors, including (PRODUCT)RED, starlight, midnight, blue, and pink.

Juli Clover for MacRumors:

The ‌iPhone 13‌ mini had the smallest share of sales of all the ‌iPhone 13‌ models, and it made up just three percent of total ‌iPhone‌ sales during the quarter. Comparatively, the other ‌iPhone 13‌ models were much more popular, and had the largest share of U.S. sales in several years.

Combined, all four ‌iPhone 13‌ models made up 71 percent of ‌iPhone‌ sales, with the standard 6.1-inch ‌iPhone 13‌ responsible for 38 percent of sales.

In the year-ago quarter, the iPhone 12 models made up 61 percent of total ‌iPhone‌ sales, so the ‌iPhone 13‌ models are performing better. The ‌iPhone 13‌ has also seen the strongest sales of any ‌iPhone‌ model during the March quarter, beating out the iPhone 11 and the ‌iPhone 12‌ when they were Apple’s flagship iPhones.

MacDailyNews Take: Yup, as predicted several years ago:

In general, the only people who still think they want a 4-inch iPhone are those who do not yet own a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 or 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus.MacDailyNews, December 5, 2014

  1. I like the smaller form factor of the iPhone mini. I was looking at the iPhone mini and thought it too expensive for what I used my phone for. I bought a shiny new iPhone SE instead.

  2. It’s small overall, close to size of iPhone SE, but because its screen goes edge to edge, it can’t be used one-handed by most people. So it’s small, but without a key benefit of being a small iPhone. Also, the camera bump is getting ever larger/thicker, and it’ll look absolutely HUGE and ridiculous on a smaller iPhone. It looks awkward now, even on the biggest iPhone. iPhone SE is ultimate evolution of the optimal and elegant user experience Steve Jobs intended.

    1. I have an iPhone13 mini and I find that is just slightly too big and awkward to use, because I have normal sized guy hands. I don’t know how women use them unless they just put everything down and use both hands. I use reachability a lot and I think it would be helpful if Apple had an accessibility mode where important controls (“go back” arrows) were lower on the screen. It’s potentially a perfect size for people who use their phone like a phone and not an iPad mini if a little more attention were paid to where controls are.

I love my 12” iPad Pro, btw. That’s the problem with the bigger phones—they are too big to be good phones and too small to be good iPads.

    2. Most excellent reasons why the Mini should disappear and here’s an idea — replaced by the SE, the new “mini,” preferable for the reasons you mentioned.

You don’t need a ridiculous camera bump, Apple’s worst industrial design engineering of the iPhone, followed by Apple’s worst interface design of the “inelegant kludge.”

If the new mini /SE was edge to edge, fabulous. The camera is superb for 99% of users who are not professional photographers and doubt they would use an iPhone for their work.

      Just sayin’…

        I don’t disagree with you, but…

Better: An SE Pro with specs similar to iPhone mini. The SE fits my hand better than the mini and I might have bought it instead had I waited until it came out. I like the mini’s better (I don’t mean bigger) display and camera though. In fact I bet the mini would sell better if nothing about it were changed but it were called an SE pro instead of a mini. Males don’t like buying things with “Mini” in the name

        1. Yeah, us males have a problem with anything not Super Max.

“Better: An SE Pro with specs similar to iPhone mini.”

Well stated and better idea, BRING…IT…ON!…

      2. I think the camera bump looks ridiculous but that doesn’t bother me at all since I don’t look at that side of the phone. I only look at the side with the display. I can feel the bump but that is actually helpful because it lets me know whether I’m holding it right-side-up or not. As for the cutout at the top of the display that annoys the hell out of me and I would be pleased as punch with a slightly smaller non-edge-to-edge display without a cutout—like the SE!

  3. As the users of iPhone mini are more on practical stuff, they don’t need to change their phone every year. Therefor, if an upgrade is provided every 3 or 4 years (as it as been the case for the last model) it’s quite sufficient.

  4. I have an 12 mini and a 13 mini in our household (I drive the 13 mini) and I really adore it. I’ve already got a 27-inch iMac in each business office and home office, a MacBook Pro also . . . I don’t really need a larger screen and I like how little space it takes up in my pockets.

I get the larger screens for most people. But I also think a lot of people forget that Android phones back in the day had larger screens as a “feature” mainly because they were using off the shelf commodity parts and they could cram smaller batteries and SOCs into their phones.

To me, the iPhone mini is the highest representation of Apple’s technology edge. It’s a baddass phone with amazing specs and it does it in a size that no other company can match. The market will speak — and I’ll be a little sad when it does.

  5. I love my iPhone 13 mini. Easy to handle and screen is excellent. I upgraded from an iPhone 8 Plus. I like the smaller size form, but the screen is almost the same. I’m also a little person, so it easier to type.

  6. MDN, the mini is about the same size as the iPhone 6 in your comment. The regular and pros are too big for me. Mini is awesome for me and I’m 6’3” with large hands.

Seems obvious to me that the next SE will eventually just be the mini.
