Apple rings in new era of Services as App Store sales hit Christmas week record

Apple has marked the close of a historic 2019 for its Services offerings, a year that introduced Apple Arcade, Apple TV+, Apple News+ and Apple Card, and celebrated the continued success of the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud and more experiences only Apple can create and deliver. Apple provides customers with the highest-quality services along with an unparalleled commitment to privacy and security, and offers creators and developers the opportunity to bring their creative visions to people around the world.

Apple’s ongoing focus on the deep integration of hardware, software and services drove all of its platforms to new heights in 2019.

The App Store is the world’s safest and most vibrant app marketplace, with over half a billion people visiting each week. It remains the safest place for users to find software and provides developers of all sizes access to customers in 155 countries. Since the App Store launched in 2008, developers have earned over $155 billion, with a quarter of those earnings coming from the past year alone. As a measure of the excitement going into 2020, App Store customers spent a record $1.42 billion between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, a 16 percent increase over last year, and $386 million on New Year’s Day 2020 alone, a 20 percent increase over last year and a new single-day record.

Apple Card and Apple Pay lead innovation with the ways customers pay for goods and services, and access everyday experiences. Last month, customers began using Apple Card Monthly Installments to purchase new iPhones and pay for them over 24 months with zero interest. In 2019, entry to more than 150 stadiums, ballparks, arenas and entertainment venues around the world was available with contactless tickets on iPhone and Apple Watch. Customers could ride public transit with Apple Pay in some of the largest cities in the world, including Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Moscow, London and New York.   1. Good PR. What irritates me is that Apple Pay gets no play. I don’t know 2 in a hundred people who have installed Apple Pay, probably because Apple keeps this gem hidden under a bushel basket. Retailers and potential users don’t know the advantage of this service. I’ll ask a retailer what they pay for standard plastic purchases and they have no idea. Apple should incentivize the use of their product. Apple TV + free for a year? How about accepting Apple Pay purchasers free of charge to the retailer for a year?

  2. Apple can tout Services all they want, but that doesn’t necessarily mean analysts or investors are going to buy into it. Analysts still mostly think that Services is Apple’s means to draw attention away from declining iPhone sales. Apple’s Services isn’t going to be accepted that easily by Wall Street. Even if iPhone sales are longer reported, it’s still going to come down to how well or how poorly iPhone sales are based on analyst’s estimates/guesses. The smartphone market has stagnated and fewer iPhones will be sold in China and practically none in India. Analysts and investors know this much and Services will only be a tiny distraction to that fact. If I’m wrong, then I apologize and must be missing something. I believe Wall Street definitely considers Apple as being a hardware company and little else. I base that on the negativity that continues to follow Apple. Services appears to have growth so that can’t be the reason. It has to be those pesky iPhone sales.

    I’m only concerned about a company’s revenue and profits falling or rising. It doesn’t matter to me how they’re made, but it’s obvious Wall Street doesn’t necessarily feel that way. I believe it’s better that Apple tries to diversify its revenue streams over the long-term. Companies need to try to adjust if one product loses steam. I don’t see it as a bad thing. I doubt a single product’s growth can last forever in a finite population.
