The iPhone 7 might come with the most important missing feature from the iPhone 6s

“One thing that differentiates the current 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones is that the larger models come with a camera that uses optical image stabilization (OIS) to help keep photos crisp and clear,” Chris Smith writes for BGR. “However, that might change in the future, at least according to a recently discovered Apple invention.”

“Awarded on Tuesday and seen first by Patently Apple, U.S. Patent 9,288,395 describes a new way of taking panorama photos that requires OIS,” Smith writes. “The patent is titled Super-resolution based on optical image stabilization and it describes technology that would let you take panoramic pictures without actually moving the iPhone as you do now.”

“There’s no proof that all iPhone 7 models will get OIS support, as most rumors focus on a special dual camera setup for a premium iPhone 7 Pro model,” Smith writes. “But this patent does suggest that Apple is thinking of OIS as an integral part of its future camera experience, regardless of device.”

MacDailyNews Take: Let’s hope we see OIS standard on both iPhone 7 and, of course, on iPhone 7 Plus (where it’s been since iPhone 6 Plus).

  1. Each generation of iPhone for several years now is also basically one of the best cameras you can own. Other than professionals who need DSLRs, the iPhone is thoroughly capable for 99.9% of the population and we always have it with us.

      1. Most people have a built-in zoom, attached to their hips. Many professionals prefer prime lenses when doing photography anyhow. There are fewer compromises. Optical zooms will almost always mean a compromise.

Larger sensor sites with +two stops improvement in low light shots would be very nice. Tried the son-in-laws S6 which has at least +1stop advantage over my iPhone 6…so at least matching that is totally necessary imo. The S6 image processing using Snapspeed – a Google app no less, in Android Loll however, is toffee slow where my iPhone is lightning quick heh heh.

    1. I’m professional and I don’t use DSLR. I ditched them years ago for the Fujifilm X-Series cameras.

I love my X-E2 with XF35mm f1.4 combo. Images are amazing from the X-Trans sensor.

No iPhone camera will replace my Fuji system. EVER!

  2. If the regular model gets OIS, I will drop the Plus. I only bought the 6/s-Plus because of OIS.

Well at least thats how I feel ATM. Come September who knows how I will feel about dual lens. 😉
