Apple lands exclusive launch of Showtime app with no cable or satellite subscription required

For the first time ever, SHOWTIME will be offered over the internet as a stand-alone streaming service launching in early July, with Apple as its first partner.

The stand-alone service will be called SHOWTIME, a brand already embraced by consumers as the home for cutting-edge original programming, sports and movies. The launch of SHOWTIME will coincide with the new seasons of the critically-acclaimed, hit series RAY DONOVAN and MASTERS OF SEX, premiering on Sunday, July 12th.

iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV users will be able to subscribe to SHOWTIME as a stand-alone service on the SHOWTIME app anywhere in the U.S., for one monthly price (US$10.99) to view on all Apple devices. Subscribers will have unlimited on demand access to every season of award-winning SHOWTIME original series, and hundreds of hours of movies, documentary and sports programming, as well as the live broadcast of the east and west coast feeds of SHOWTIME. Showtime will offer a 30-day free trial to new customers who sign up through Apple in July. Apple users simply need to go to the SHOWTIME app on their device to sign up and create a SHOWTIME account.   1. Awesome. Although I am going to wait to see how the new apple tv subscription will be when it comes out before i lay down money, this is still good news. I also like how they embrace the name of the company and don’t add “go” or “now” onto the app. Just stick it with the same name….its annoying with extra names.

  2. When they come out with a “Stand-a-lone” streaming service for ESPN then my cable TV service will be discontinued. I can do without the cable channels and I will finally buy that over-the-air antenna and be done with the cable companies (except for freak’n comcast for internet).

    Come on Disney….let it be! They can even make their others stations a separate subscription and I won’t care.

  3. I wonder if you’ll be able to use video out from an iOS device to watch it on a TV set. Used to be able to do that with Netflix, but now they block the video out so it requires an Apple TV to watch on a non-iOS screen. I don’t know if the HBO service blocks video output or not (I already subscribe to HBO).

  4. Let the consumer decide if it’s worth $11. And let’s see what competition does to the pricing. The cable companies relied on monopolies to hawk their channel lineups. Showtime has no monopoly on original programming. This is the way it should be. You buy what you want if you think the price is right for you.
