Dvorak: Google has gone certifiably nuts

“One of the earmarks of a poorly managed business is the inability to focus on core competencies and improve the product, its delivery, and the efficiency of the business. It’s like a guy who runs a lawn mower-sharpening business who decides to sell junk jewelry on the side or moose heads on eBay because he saw someone else do it and it seemed like a good idea at the time,” John C. Dvorak writes for PC Magazine. “This is Google.”

“It’s just scattershot nonsense that has very little to do with its core money-making businesses: Internet search and online advertising,” Dvorak writes. “The company’s effort to develop a self-driving car are noble, but what does it have to do with anything?”

“Now we have the culmination,” Dvorak writes, “a souvenir shop called the Google Merchandise Store selling every sort of Google-branded nonsense imaginable, including a $50 meat “branding iron” that will imprint the Android robot image on a hamburger or steak.”

  1. And this is different from Amazon how?

    Google knows this. That’s why there’s a two classes of common stock. One class that votes and is controlled by management, the other stock class doesn’t have any rights to control company. Don’t like it don’t buy it.

    1. Yes, let’s exercise what Steve taught us about a thousand “no’s”. Keep focused. NO to Google censored search, NO to data harvesting, NO to Glass, No to secret drones, NO, NO, NO. “For as long as it takes!”

    2. Google’s business has nowhere to go but down – because their business model of ever increasing advertising must eventually annoy everyone hugely. Apple’s focus is as sound as you can get – it’s always the customer – but Google’s is self destructive by definition. They can only put their own ad revenue first, otherwise they will stop growing – and that’s putting the customer last. So Google’s products become less and less usable.

  2. Someone just pulled their head from their ass for the first time in 5 years to make an observation about Google’s business model that has already been hacked to death 20,000 times.

  3. Ok, without sounding totally like I know what I’m talking about…

    What Google is doing with all of these side line projects does have some merit, but only to themselves.

    Since it is April 15th, I can safely speculate that it is all for the TAX WRITE-OFFS.

    Pretty simple explanation, huh? Think about it… Everything they do is virtual and profitable, mostly. They need some other outlets to sink money into that they can take a loss on, without risk to their “core competencies” that Dvorak mentions.

    Think about how seamless and straight that pipeline of money is flowing into their HQ for literally doing nothing tangible. They Have to waste some of it or Uncle Sam will take even more.

    This way Sergey and Eric get to have a little fun in a driverless carriage and maybe some free publicity.

    Dvorak probably isn’t tax savvy enuf to figure this out.

    1. Dvorak knows all about Tax Write-Offs.

      When Apple was looking for a new OS for the Mac, in the 90s, Dvorak bought a big chunk of Be OS.

      He has been pissed off at Apple ever since.

    2. Spending $1 to get a $0.30 tax write off means you are still out $0.60.

      Building a key chain for $0.25, pricing it at $10 and claiming the write off when you don’t sell 200 million units is . . . well the I.R.S. will catch on to that game sooner or later.

  4. Not a fan of google by any means, or windows etc. But wasn’t dell HEAVILY criticized by wall street for not diversifying?

    Hey, Google is doing just fine in their diversification. It is taking them down the right path! May they get what they deserve!
