  1. Well, this is saying something of interest. Here are a couple of my thoughts:

    1) Apple has been very careful not to over-manufacture the watch. They, of anyone, know the horrors of being stuck with inventory no one wants. To be fair, this is a new market in general with no serious previous sales data to consider. – Yes, that’s a swipe at stupidwatches.

    2) There could be a serious problem getting these beauties manufactured to Apple’s specs and quality expectations. – We’ve seen some indication that this is the case.

    3) Apple is using the canny marketing trick of building desire with low supply fire. (That rhymes). – This concept has been suggested here previously.

    4) Apple is doomed. 😆 😆 😆

    1. 5) Demand is incredible. Remember, they were going to produce 5-6 million for the initial batch. Then there were rumors saying manufacturing was more difficult and the initial would be cut in half. I doubt this initial batch is for the entire quarter, and so worst case it probably covers the rest of April and May. The best case is the initial covers the rest of April and the first week of May. So, if those productions rumors are correct then they sold between 4-6 million yesterday, which is incredible.

        1. A better washing machine would be one whose operation and necessity males could understand, one they would be drawn to, and one they would want to use. Manufacturers are not there yet.

        2. I’ve certainly written about that before. Not only the washing machine but the dryer as well. More importantly folding the clothes after they are dried. Sounds a bit complicated, but there is always that think different aspect.

A while back I started looking into 3D printers specifically for clothes and realized that a lot of the materials used could be recycled. I can see that some day instead of washing our clothes we’ll recycle them and print out new ones as an alternative to washing.

I don’t know it’s conjecture but I do agree with you, our view about our appliances, is an area that could use a major disruption.

  2. This list is wrong, as of 2:46pm eastern on 4/11/15, all sport models in 38mm and 42mm ship in June. All 38mm Steel in silver ship 4-6 weeks, all 42mm steel in Silver ship in June. The Space Black link in 38mm and 42mm ship in June. All gold ship in June.

  3. Some people here, and in the media, blame “low supply at launch,” as if Apple Watch has already been released. It’s still TWO WEEKS until Apple Watch is actually released. During those two weeks, Apple Watch production is ongoing. Only now, they are producing in response to ACTUAL orders (not expectations), so production rate is likely to be ramping up.

Apple will have a lot more Apple Watches on April 24th compared to the stockpile on April 10th (which is probably already a few million). Apple wants to under-promise and over-delivery, so those current estimates are likely to be conservative; Apple is using a “worse case” scenario to estimate. If production ramps smoothly over the next two weeks and beyond, and Apple engages contingencies to expand production capacity further, those estimates for availability will improve. And customers with existing orders will get their Apple Watch earlier than expected.

    1. Agreed 100%. I also find interesting that the model that everyone said no one in their right mind would by – the Edition model – is the model with the longest expected shipping date.I guess there are quite a few people who want a $17,000 smartwatch after all.

      1. Someone on another blog mentioned they made 80k Editions for the Chinese market. Assuming they made 200k Editions for the entire tier 1 launch and they just sell that amount this fiscal third quarter (they don’t make any more for the rest of the quarter) then revenue would equal $2.8B (assuming average ASP of $14k). This means the revenue from the Edition is a minimum of 7.5% of last year’s fiscal third quarter, which is incredible.

      2. Socal Apple Store has two week wait to TRY-ON the Edition Watch
I did some checking at a Socal Apple Store and a manager told me there was currently a two-week waiting period to get on the Apple Edition Watch try-on program…….!$
The Watch display case and the try-on tables and Watch simulators were all pretty busy. No lines at all…..perhaps that may change on April 24th……
The store employees all seemed very excited about the Watch and the new capabilities that are coming to this new market product……..!!

  4. By the time Christmas rolls around Apple will have all production kinks worked out, production will have caught up to early demand and inventories will be ready for the onslaught of popular demand.

    Another Apple owned Xmas!

  5. And for those who are worried about knotted panties waiting for your watch just look at the bright side: Apple will catch up to demand well before the stock market catches up to a semblance of the real value of Apple stock.

  6. I visited the apple store in palo alto Friday afternoon. No crowds. I walked right up to the try on table without an appointment and was able to look at all the models and bands…

I did not try to see the edition watch… but they were there… and god are they beautiful…

These watches are very different in person than in the pictures! They are amazing!

I ordered a space gray sport 42mm, at 12:05am PDT, and have to wait until 5/13.

I love the black leather magnetic band!

The 38mm might be a better fit for my wrist. Oh well.

  7. My wife was the last to order in our family. She ordered the 38 mm steel Milanese watch. Shipping time of 4-6 weeks. My steel leather loop (and extra black sport band) and the kids 42 mm black aluminum, 42 mm aluminum with white band, and 38 mm aluminum with pink band all supposed to ship about mid May or sooner. Looks like we got lucking, ordering just after midnight.

    1. Careful if you order those on the same apple id. I already had one of mine canceled today by Apple that I ordered Thursday night. And it was the one for my daughters graduation present, the one that had to be here on time.

“We are unable to process your order as it exceeds the quantity limits per customer. As a result, we’ve cancelled your order and you will not be charged.

      We apologize for any inconvenience.”

  9. I was at the Apple store on 4th Street in Berkeley, CA., earlier. No wait to try one on and very few folks standing around the display case. Folks seem to arrive in bunches.

Interesting to see the stores sell the watch. It’s a very different experience from buying a Mac, etc. Usually, the products, in a sense, sell themselves. Folks know what they want. Maybe they want to try out the keyboard or the trackpad, but pretty much they come with a friend who shows them the ropes.

In the case of the watch, it really depends on the sales person (whatever they’re called in Apple talk). And the sale is very high touch – rather like trying on jewelry at a jewelry store. And yet, clearly personalizing the Watch, isn’t something you can do in the store. It’s something that will take some time and be quite personal and interactive – rather like working with someone to transfer your files from a PC. A big challenge for the existing store staff, it seems to me.
