Marketeer Martin McNulty: Apple Watch is a really poor product

Forward3D Chief Executive Officer Martin McNulty discusses Apple’s introduction of the Apple Watch and why he feels the product is very “poor product” and “un-Apple.” He speaks with Guy Johnson on Bloomberg Television’s “The Pulse.”

Guy Johnson: “A really poor product?”
Martin McNulty: Yes, I don’t know what problem this is solving. I really don’t understand.

MacDailyNews Take: That much is obvious.

People talk about this being a device, but it’s not a device, it’s an accessory. Because this product only works if you’ve got an iPhone in you pocket… I don’t really understand what this is doing. — Forward3D CEO Martin McNulty

MacDailyNews Take: Then why are you on TV sputtering about, trying to talk about it?

Among other things, Apple Watch can track your fitness information and play music contained in its own onboard storage via Bluetooth without your iPhone being present.

I think there are loads of luxury watches out there… I’m not sure what problem this watch is solving… When I look at the features, it very much looks like an also-ran. — Forward3D CEO Martin McNulty

MacDailyNews Take: You obviously didn’t look at the features or you’d know what Apple Watch can do without the iPhone present.

I don’t think people are going to start abandoning their Patek Philippes to wear a $300 watch. — Forward3D CEO Martin McNulty

MacDailyNews Take: Alright, nobody is actually this stupid, so follow the money: Forward3D’s client list is right here, and it’s loaded with fashion retailers including – drum roll, please – The Watch Hut, The Watch Gallery, and many other retailers who sell – gasp! – wristwatches.

Oops, make that used to sell wristwatches.

Does Bloomberg Business point out this potential conflict of interest? Not anywhere we can see.

This feels like a sort of vanity project. You know, it’s the epitome of wearable, but, really, I just don’t think that’s how the market’s truly going to play out… This doesn’t feel like a killer product to me. — Forward3D CEO Martin McNulty

MacDailyNews Take: We love the smell of fear in the morning!

MacDailyNews Take: Great marketing there, Martin T. Marketeer! You really saved your clients’ bacon while making yourself look like quite the genius.

Thanks for the quotes! We plan on using them frequently in the future.

MacDailyNews Note: 11:40am EDT: Amended Apple Watch’s standalone features. Thanks, opsono!

    1. The fact of the matter is, the Apple Watch is a completely unnecessary product… anyway you slice it.

I have Mac computers, iPads, and me and my wife have iPhone sixes, and I’m going to pass on this one!

This watch really tests the limits of Apple Fanboyism.

      1. I’ve been using Apple products since 86 and I’m Apple all the way. But this product seems, well, impractical and pointless for me.

I think it will sell and after a few month of use, ppl will find it’s not worth the effort and it will end up in a drawer.

  1. The comments from people that have actually used the watches are a lot more interesting then someone guessing at their usefulness. I didn’t think that I was going to get one of these things a few months ago but I’m leaning strongly towards getting one now.

    1. Half of these people are just upset because they can’t afford it. It sure feels like Apple is forcing prices up… and that’s a good thing. There’s been far too many junk-spewing companies in our world the past 10 years. But then again, does Apple’s efforts at raising prices actually create more of these bottom-feeders?

    2. The word you meant to use is than. Than is used for comparison i.e I prefer this THAN that and then is used to illustrate sequence i.e I went to the shop THEN I went home.
You and millions of other internet users get this wrong on a daily basis even though this is basic, fundamental English.
Now that this has been pointed out to you, I don’t want to see you making this mistake again.

  2. Watched this dork being interviewed on Bloomberg today!

Wonder how long he will remain the CEO of Forward3D after espousing such utter nonsense!

Probably paid a nice retainer by a consortium of watch companies that are going to get burned.

  3. This man is totally clueless. He’s probably never used any smartwatch. He says AppleWatch is a poor product but what is he basing it on. You shouldn’t say something is a poor product unless you’ve actually used it and found it to be a poor product. Maybe he simply doesn’t know how to express himself. Apple is not going to spend billions of dollars to come out with a poor product. Apple must have done some consumer research to assure this is a viable product. How is this an un-Apple type of product? Does he mean it’s not a product Steve Jobs wouldn’t have come out with? This is a Tim Cook product but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good product.

  4. “This doesn’t feel like a killer product to me.”
You mean it feels like a live product, a life generating product, a life supporting product something that will liven up your day?

It will to those who buy it, well most who buy it and who can admit to it.

  5. Not sure about your conflict suggestion with the watch hut. The apple watch will not compete with traditional watches (apart from the occasional arm space). This article is pretty poor and purely pro-apple, It reminds me of the Scientology cult trying to defend their practices.

    1. and we know you are small in your mind
we remember the comments as the iPhone was released,

you obviously are mimicking those now

echos are glorious ten years later when i retire on my laurels, thanks for the memories

  6. “I don’t understand” is supposed to equal “poor product”.
Nope – it equals either that you are a hypocritical liar or an idiot.

“there are loads of luxury watches out there”
It’s not a watch!!!! Duh! It’s a wrist computer that also tells the time.

  7. “These PC guys are not going to walk in and figure out phones.”

“This month we sold our 700 Millionth iPhone!”

I, too, doubt they’ll walk in and figure out watches.

    1. And homes, and health and cars. The critics fail to realize that Apple is working _with_ established industry authorities on these products and solutions. they announced today that ResearchKit is based on a full year of work, and yet how many news articles talked about it before today? The truth is that there’s so much more to Apple than what we see on the surface.

  8. When people refer to apple watch, why do they become so forgetful………………The medical Application of this device is just LIMITLESS not to mention SAFETY…….

  9. I agree with him. Apple has lost their freekin mind. This is the BIG news? A 12″ laptop (huh?) and a 17,000 wristwatch? The 12″ is definitely NOT for power users. Too small and underpowered. Oh, it is for the “average” user. For that money I can get a much more powerful Chromebook or Windows one. No fan? What ? R U on drugs ? So it slows down at any hint of work? No thanks. The watch: I hate it. Rounded corners and no character. Even the 17,000 one looks like the cheapest model. Tell me this: In 3 years when the hardware is obsolete, do I have to spend an additional 17,000? What is Apple smoking? Wait, I know. They are smoking with no Steve Jobs. That’s what. This does not Feel like a Steve Jobs product announcement. Tim Cook is a moron. Business manager? Perhaps. New product visionary? NO freekin way. Apple wake up!

      1. And “althego” is the protector of the Apple watch. He will let no negative comment go un-replied. For him, the Apple watch is not just a gadget but a message from heaven. He will even venture out, from his mom’s basement to stand in line for this: The Apple iWatch! Long live althegeo, long live the Apple watch. May it’s name and faceplate go unblemished for eternity.
