“Following a short beta testing period, Apple’s iCloud.com website has been updated to make its iWork suite of apps accessible to all users, even those without an Apple device,” Juli Clover reports for MacRumors.
“As of today, anyone can sign up for an Apple ID to access Pages, Numbers, and Keynote for free,” Clover reports. “Signing up for a free Apple ID account entitles users to 1GB of complimentary iCloud storage to be used with the apps for storing documents.”
“iCloud.com’s-only apps can be accessed from recent versions of Safari, Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer,” Clover reports. “Free accounts are limited to 1GB of storage and users will need an iOS device or Mac to acquire more storage or access iCloud’s full set of features.”

Great to see, but that 1GB limit is a little puny! They need to match Google on all fronts!

Google gives you free stuff because you are the product, and paying customers are the advertisers.
Apple’s paying customer is the person who buys Apple hardware, and they get the benefit of all services Apple offers. Free iWork is just a teaser for non-paying customers. Notice how there is NO advertising anywhere on the web pages of iWork online. Apple positively loses money on every user of iWork online who doesn’t own Apple hardware.
For many, iWork for iCloud is just another useless offering from Apple.
All things are useless to some, moderately useful for many and very useful to others, thats the way of the world isn’t it.
Let’s see. Useless is that for free, a user can get three very good apps that can read MS Office documents, and get enough storage for about 10,000 documents (100KB each). Admittedly there’s some limited usefulness for PC users, but C’mon Man, useless?
Woohoo! Despite some preferring “real” upgrades to open availability, I like this a lot. I have avoided iCloud because it didn’t offer me much incentive to put my stuff in the cloud. Now I can work on things on my Windoze machine at work *and* on my iPad at home – I’m a happy fella!
