“There can be no greater equalizer in the battle to determine which smartphone display is superior than how it looks in the sun,” Russell Holly writes for Geek.com. “Our star equally crushes every screen, leaving people all over the world squinting and covering the display with their other hand to make out the text message they just got. Some folks defeat the sun with polarized sunglasses, and in doing so find an all-new challenge with using a smartphone.”
“Of the many things that were announced with Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus updates was an improved polarizer for the display. While that might not sound like much, it turns out this is actually a pretty big deal,” Holly writes. “The end result is inescapable. Apple’s improved polarizer makes a noticeable difference in using the phone, and if you’re the type to wear polarized sunglasses on a regular basis, that’s something worth considering when choosing your next phone.”

Apple made wonderful products.
Apple needs to keep at the marketing and PR though.
We can’t assume intelligence among the press community ( not to mention hatred, bribery and corruption: astro turfing– as Samsung has already been fined in Asia — , bribing of bloggists, actual investments in websites and news centres like Amazon buying into Business Insider and WSJ).
Too many articles after the higher end reviews by Mossberg , Pogue etc have been filled erroneous facts and bashing of the new iPhones. Sites are saying that the iPhone is still inferior to Androids because it has ‘fewer megapixels in the camera, less pixel density in the screens etc” without mentioning (or perhaps understanding) that superior tech allows the iPhone to take BETTER photos than higher megapixel cameras (as side by side photo comparisons show) or the superiority of Apple’s new screen tech as the article above explained.
I’ve read long articles bashing the iPhone as inferior to android by the writers CHERRY PICKING features from a whole host of android phones (the screen is not as good as Android ‘A’, the camera is not good as ‘B’, the memory is not as large as ‘C’ etc).
so in short Apple has to continuously put its message across.
Too many people and organizations have a vested interest in Apple failing or at least not dominating. For example 90% of tech writers and tech sites are terrified that iOS would win over Android as they make a lot more money writing dozens of android reviews and than a handful of apple , and dozens of companies from HTC to RIM are being devastated and there’s a lot of Apple hate around.
If I could give your post a million stars I would. I thin it’s a huge mistake for Apple to allow this misinformation/lying/FUD to go unchallenged. It’s a core dynamic of group think that no answer is a tacit acknowledgement. It’s obviously not hurting sales, but that is an extremely short sighted view. Apple should combat this just on principle, but even practically speaking there is damage being done to the brand which is largely unnecessary and avoidable. Apple no longer has the be dirt of underdog status to protect it from stupid attacks. Good sales is not an excuse to let this go. I was in line overnight for the iPhone 6, and even most of the people I talked to who were buying iPhones believed a lot of this misinformation and FUD. I really wish Apple would do more about this.
“I think it’s a huge mistake for Apple to allow this misinformation/lying/FUD to go unchallenged.”
I disagree. Let others talk smack. Apple and Apple products speak for themselves.
Apple doesn’t like to feed the trolls.
Yea, I’ve already seen the adds Samsung is putting out spewing their misinformation. They really are a scummy company. That’s why I’m boycotting anything they make and encouraging people to do the same.
Sorry Davewrite but while I understand, I have to disagree. In these type battles, the only way to win is to rise above the child like noise. Kids yelling my father is better than yours cause he can beat people up is a cry of the weak.
I do agree that Apple could come out with a better ad campaign where they show that picking “numbers” means nothing while results do. But then again, most of the anal…ysts still think market share trumps everything, no matter how much money you lose, and you have to sell all your phones on opening day cause that is the only number that matters.
Economics 101 says if you want to make money there are certain rules. Apple is following them very well.
“I have to disagree. In these type battles, the only way to win is to rise above the child like noise.”
it’s not rising above the “childlike noise”
How many ordinary consumers even know about the advancements of the iPhone screen if Apple doesn’t made it more well known? How many ordinary consumers would look through the launch videos now that the launch is over or pour through tech sites and have the ability to sift through them ? Like I said most tech sites do NOT even want to emphasize Apple’s advantages because it’s in their best interest to keep Android and alive and thriving. The consumers judgements are often skewed by FUD like ‘Apple screens are inferior to Samsung phones due to lower Pixel density’ . The FUD is spread also by rivals including the hiring of astro Turfers (like I said Samsung has already been convicted of this in Asia)
An illustration: How many good politicians have you seen lose elections due to bad Pr and marketing and asshats win because their campaign marketing was better?
Sure Apple sales are great but could they be even better with better marketing and P.R?
Actually Cook got rid of both Apple PR’s chief and head of USA marketing in the same week a few months ago. (Note the PR chief left BEFORE a successor was in place so it’s more than a retirement). Apple’s PR recently has been much more aggressive: Cook refuting ‘Haunted Empire’ book calling it nonsense (stopping it in its tracks), answering Chinese press charges of spying within a day , refuting EU charges, making several statements on iCloud breach etc. This in stark contrast to a while back not responding to Mike Daisy, NYT Pulitzer prize winning slander on apple’s labour and tax issues etc. To this day , look at the press articles, many press people and the public STILL think apple is a labour abuser and Tax evader (instead of the reality of being the most progressive employer in China and the biggest Tax contributor in the USA ) . Once FUD is not answered it becomes FACT in public consciousness.
Cook IS doing more PR now , I’m just saying he should not let up , in fact increase it.
Hundreds of Billions is involved (Apple alone makes 30-40 billion every three months) and for that kind of money there is no doubt Apple’s rivals would do whatever it takes to win including trying to manipulate the ‘message’ especially in our accelerating mass media world.

I used to be an Ad and PR pro.
I think what this article is saying is that iPhone 6/+ are useable in direct sunlight, and also through polarised sunglasses. This was not previously the case, making iPhone users “shadow-huggers” laughed at by users of certain other phones.
This is a relief to learn, for I love my Oakley Feedback which are polarised. Not that I was tempted to purchase a Galaxy Tab just for their sake, but I had expected to pout a little before upgrading
you pout too much.
“Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun.
But mama, that’s where the fun is.”
(insert Chopsticks here.)
Well I’m glad people no longer be polarized about this daylight viewing issue.
I also have for a few years now.
Scum of the earth company !
Along side google!
I’ve been reading my iPhone screen in direct sun for years. What are they talking about?
It’s true that it’s easier to read in the shadow, but it’s still readable in direct sun.
