Come on, now, Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus really isn’t THAT big!

“I picked up an iPhone 6 Plus from my local Apple Store this morning,” Martin Bryant writes for The Next Web. “Like most people, I hadn’t seen it ‘in the flesh’ before I reserved it (let alone before I paid for it) but I thought it was notable enough a device to spend some quality time with over the next year, seeing how Apple and its ecosystem of developers adapt to the phablet form factor.”

“I thought it was worth sharing the intial thoughts when I opened the box, set the phone up and started to use it. If you’re an iPhone owner wary about upgrading to the 6 Plus, read on,” Bryant writes. “For all the people talking about how ‘enormous’ the 6 Plus is, it’s really not that big.”

“I can even type one-handed and in initial tests, it actually feels just as comfortable to do so as on the iPhone 5s with its much narrower display. In fact, as I don’t have to bend my thumb as much, it’s maybe a little more comfortable,” Bryant writes. “I don’t think people with small hands… will be quite so happy, but I can’t see the 6 Plus forcing me to change my routines at all.”

    1. As I said elsewhere, size of a phone has NOTHING to do with class or taste and your individual opinion, on what constitutes class or taste, is utterly irrelevant.

On the other hand, the opinion of 40+ people that YOU have no class is a lot more telling.

  1. Sorry, but yes it IS that big. I printed the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus to exact scale earlier this week, and set them down on the table text to my iPhone 5, and the 6 Plus looks absolutely ridiculously, stupidly, huge. The 6 Plus is taller than the iPad mini is wide. Sorry, but people who walk and talk on it will look just as stupid as the guy from Dell did holding the Dell Streak up to his face so many years ago, and as as stupid as the Samsung Note users.

I have ZERO interest in carrying a device that size around with me. The iPhone 5/5s was just right. I can see some people wanting a bigger device using something like the iPhone 6, but the 6 Plus is just stupidly large. I’m 6’3″ and 225, and there’s no way in hell it would even fit in some of my pockets, so yes – it sure as hell is THAT big.

Looks like I’m stuck with the iPhone 6 if I want anything better than last year’s iPhone 5s.

    1. Agreed! Yes, I want something a bit bigger than my 5 so that if I’m forced to trade stocks on it I can do so easily. On the 5 it’s really tough and with large amount of money at stake it’s costly to make mistakes or be delayed in getting a trade placed.

That said, the 6 Plus was just too big. It’s too tall for a rear jeans pocket, which is all I wear these days, and I’m pretty sure that sitting on it that way would eventually lead to disaster. I think the 6 is going to be just right, and I agree with others that a 5 size is needed that has the newer features like fingerprint scanning.

      1. You get a life. I have as much right to my opinion as anyone else. At least I’m registered and post on the site with the same username I’ve been using for years.

My point is that as popular as the iPhone 5 and 5s were (and continue to be), I think there’s a market for an updated phone that size. I know plenty of people who do NOT want a larger phone. Maybe there should have been a 6, 6 Plus, and 6 minus.

Personally, I like the size of the 5/5s, but I want the camera, features, etc. from the 6. I really want the optical image stabilization from the 6 Plus, but have no interest in that size of device. Would have been nice if Apple could have made the 6 as capable as the 6 Plus in that regard.

I’m not convinced Apple did the right thing here. It really feels like they’re chasing Samsung down the “big phone” rabbit hole. I guess we’ll see who was right after a couple of quarters of sales results.

        1. “At least I’m registered and post on the site with the same username I’ve been using for years.”

Which in reality doesn’t mean squat anymore. Looks like you’re just gonna have to suck it up and realize that we don’t always get everything we want in life. Learn to deal with it.

        2. While I love the size of the 6 Plus, I totally respect where you’re coming from. I think a lot of people would’ve preferred even the 3.5″ iPhone. By not having a range of sizes, Apple will definitely lose some amount of market share.

  2. pocketability is important to me. i have read some reviews that say you really meed a cover. what is the sense in making something thin so it doesn’t “feel” bulky if you have to then put a case on it. the cover then exacerbates the issue of getting it in and out of your pocket. i really really wish they had kept a smaller size similar to last year’s model. everyone for the last few years has claimed that only a small minority want big phones. if so ,then why force people to get bigger phones? just noticed that since ios 8 i can’t scroll within this commenting window.

    1. The only case I have ever put on my iPhones (original, 3GS, 4S, 5S) is a Mophie battery case I have for my 5S now if I know I’m going to be out for a long time and not able to charge up. If you’re careful with your iPhone, you don’t “need” a case.

    2. Exactly. That was my point, too. Looks like the “phablet” fans are out in full force though, since if you voice any dissent whatsoever about the size of the new phones, you’ll be down-ranked and told to get a life. Apparently, we’re somehow enemies of Apple and its fans if would have preferred a 5/5s-sized phone with all new capabilities. I wouldn’t have even minded something a little thicker – give me some damn battery life! Has ANYBODY asked for these phones to be thinner?

    1. Went to the Apple store to see the new phones and how they fit in my hands and pockets. Both phones fit just fine in my Levi jean front and back pockets (and my jeans are average size – 33″ waist). The 6+ felt a little bit large… but the screen is just awesome!

  3. Really depends on hand size; if you can palm a basketball, the 6 plus is actually a one handed phone. Only real worry was whether it was “pocketable” (which it is).

just spent a few minutes in the Apple Store trying to convince myself it was too big, but couldn’t; if you have big hands, it is perfect. 5 now seems too small… Order placed, 6 plus on the way.

  4. I love the comments from the Android fans. They are only able to talk about how Apple is so far behind because of screen size. They can’t talk about 64bit and a motion coprocessor that makes the iPhones a lot faster. A fingerprint reader that is easy to use and does not send your info over the internet. A kill switch so you can use your phones in Calaforina. Yes Apple did not concentrate on the big screen first. They concentrate on speed and security first. Something that is more important. Unfortantly it will be another year or two before they come out with that stuff so we can say “wow Android just caught up with Apple.” Now that we have maxed on screen size internals are going to be what’s important.

    1. agreed – however, Apple did focus on big screens first.
iPad was the first big screen, then Apple focuses on a retina big screen. The iPad could have easily became a phone yet more suitable for that category would have been the iPad mini. When Apple introduced the iPad mini, that was the time to capitalize on the size factor for a phone. Apple still way ahead of the clone makers and copy cats. And we all know, when Apple chooses to have something new or innovate iPad mini to a true phone — that Apple will do it right. As usual. iPhone 6 plus is gorgeous – Apple didn’t copy anyone, they simply listen to its customers needs as there are people who love iPhone and have bigger hands that require a bigger screen. As well there are older users who do have sight issues who wanted a larger screen. A larger screen came from Apple long ago. SO all you Android fans wise up. iPad and retina screens were not the market before Samsung made what is known as a Phablet.
And lastly, if that is all Samsung can contribute to the industry is a big phone that has tablet potential — then Oh oh oh bless you Samsung thank you for such an incredible innovation. Lol.

  5. In all honesty i think both iphones will do well and im sure that we will see a 4in iphone next year. Id like to see a 4. 4.7 and the 5.5in.

Apple is going to kill android the one thing they have not had was a decent free iphone. No one wanted the 4S it seemed old and small next to everything else. SO i think the 5c being free now with its colors and such makes a great phone for those thinking about plunging into Apple.

Just like the 5C did well last year not everyone wanted the extras of the 5S.

  6. I would expect (hope) Apple is considering upgrading the iPhone 5s next year – they’ve locked out people who already have the 5s and like the size. If they could get the new camera, NFC and a better battery, and a little better performance with iOS 8 (or 9), they’d really cover the whole market.

  7. StackOverflow, read this very carefully and this goes for the trolls also.

I do not care that any other smartphone had a feature earlier than Apple’ device. I will say it again with emphasis.

I DO NOT CARE THAT ANY OTHER SMARTPHONE HAD A FEATURE EARLIER THAN APPLE’S DEVICE.

The reason is that I know that Apple will always implement that feature with much greater care and good design rather than check a feature box. I will never buy a non-Apple device because I am fully vested in the Apple way and I do not buy cheap plastic substitutes.

I make very good money and I want the best. BTW, a great majority of Apple buyers are people who earn very good money.

So Samdung and the other wannabes will never get my money no matter how many billions that spend in advertising.

    Got it? Good!
