Apple’s new Reversible USB Cable not likely to ship this year

“Following the USB power adapter redesign rumors, we’ve now received word that Apple’s new reversible Lightning to USB cable may not be ready in time to ship with the iPhone 6,” Dom Esposito reports for 9to5Mac.

“According to third-party Apple retailer Moca.co, Apple has yet to place orders for the reversible cable from its manufacturing partner,” Esposito reports. “Apparently, samples have been sent to Apple for approval by the manufacturing partner, but nothing else has moved forward in the production process at this time.”

Esposito reports, “Once everything is set into motion, it could be a number of months before the cables are ready for consumer purchase.”

“The redesigned power adapter may, however, be ready to launch with the iPhone 6, as Moca.co tells MacRumors the design has been confirmed and mass production is already underway,” Eric Slivka reports for MacRumors. “According to the report, the new adapter supports up to 2A of current, twice that of the current adapter shipping with the iPhone. The new adapter will reportedly be able to power all iPhone, iPod, and iPad mini models, with the redesign likely driven by the higher power requirements of the larger iPhone 6 models.”

  1. Something tells me that Apple won’t switch to the USB reversible and will wait and see how the market adopts USB 3.1 Type C. It’s supposed to be one USB to rule them all and it has great promise.

    1. How many host devices are out in the wild with USB-A female sockets? Hundreds of millions, at least; not just computers, but chargers, car radios, portables, external batteries…
It will be a very, very long time before USB-C becomes ubiquitous.

      1. USB-C will be backwards compatible (supporting up to USB 3.0).

So what we’re going to see are portable devices (phones, tablets, drives) being USB-C very soon, with USB-A to USB-C cables/adapters being used until USB-C becomes ubiquitous on computers, TVs, cars, accessories, etc….

I’d imagine Apple would jump on the USB-C on the Macs pretty much right away as they’re always so concerned with making things smaller/thinner.

It will be interesting to see what happens with USB-C versus Lightning.
