Well-connected Apple analyst predicts Cupertino’s 2014 product roadmap

“Because Apple rumors come and go faster than the latest celebrity gossip, it’s often challenging to to know whether they are worthy of your attention. When they come from KGI Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo, however, anyone interested in what’s coming from the consumer-electronics giant should perk up,” Mark Rogowsky reports for Forbes. “Last year, Kuo laid out a road map in January that nearly predicted Apple’s product releases for the remainder of 2013 to the letter. And now he’s back for more, suggesting that Apple has a doozy of a third quarter planned, as reported on AppleInsider. If Kuo is right — and it’s likely much of what he says will come to pass — not only will Apple release new iPhones, but it will also offer more powerful iPads, a brand new Macbook Air, the long-awaited iWatch, an updated Apple TV.”

“iWatch: Kuo sees the watch arriving in the middle of the third quarter, and being offered in two sizes, to accommodate the physical differences between men and women,” Rogowsky reports. “[As for iPhone, Kuo sees a] 4.7-inch phone and a 5.5-inch phablet. He believes the two models will carry different resolutions with the smaller model at 1334 x 750 and the larger one at 1920 x 1080. While differing pixel counts are more than believable, the smaller resolution seems unlikely. It would be an entirely unique display among smartphones and an odd one at that. Apple could achieve very nearly the same pixels per inch with a 1280 x 720 screen of that size and not wind up with the only 1334 x 750 display on the market. So why would it bother? If it chooses the more standard resolution, the visuals between the two models will scale perfectly at 1.5:1 as well.”

Rogowsky reports, “The new Macbook Air will come in a single 12-inch design (bye bye 11 and 13-inch models) with a Retina display.”

  1. What a great set of predictions. Reminds of the good ol’ day of multiple Apple releases throughout the year and the high speculation for products.

The low cost iMac will squeeze the competition. The AppleTV is a must have. The new MBA retina will sell by the ton. And the larger iPhones will appeal to many.

    Just hope this is true…

  2. This analyst has a better track record than most. It’s just sad Apple will go another year and dump all their new product at once and production constraints will limit sales in their busiest quarter (again). However, if he’s accurate, it is an impressive lineup.

  3. A 12″ MBA? No thanks. I was thinking of getting the next MBA, but will likely go with the next rMBP instead. 12″ is just way too small to be practical in my world.

    1. I’ve had a 13” MBA and found it slightly large for use on an airplane. Looking for ultra portability I bought an 11″ Air. While I enjoy the portability the screen is too small. A 12″ sounds perfect for those who frequently fly. In the office they are concept to 27″ Thunderbolt monitor and I use a wireless keyboard.

    2. The 12″ MBA, if the rumors are true, should be an awesome device. It could be as small as the MBA 11″ and provide more screen real estate than the MBA 13″.

  4. Love Apple- but why does everything these days revolve around the 3rd and 4th quarter ? iPhone 3G was released on July 11th. I pads came out in March. Apple TV came out i March also. I think they should go back to the old schedule Steve used. release things earlier. It doesn’t make it more special to wait until the fall

  5. Predicting iPhone and iPad updates are really not rocket science. This year the variable is whether larger iPhones will be released (almost certainly, if for no other reason than to spite Samsung and take market share from it).
