Rumors of a cheaper, 8GB iPhone make no sense

“It’s amazing what happens to your shares when you’re Apple and there are rumors you will release a cheaper iPhone — your shares rise almost 1% to $529.74,” Richard Saintvilus writes for TheStreet. “According to TechCrunch, not only is Apple planning to release a cheaper phone, the device, which is said to be an 8GB version of the iPhone 5c, will be unveiled as early as Tuesday.”

“We’ve been down this road before and it seems investors haven’t learned anything,” Saintvilus writes. “Aside from the popular talking points about Apple’s perceived lack of innovation, the company’s margins continue to be cited as impediments to the stock’s upward movement.”

“So if this report is true, which pegs this 8GB iPhone at $85 less than the regular 5c, it doesn’t make financial sense for Apple to pursue this route. It will only add more margin pressure,” Saintvilus writes. “The other thing is when combining apps, photos, videos and so on, I just don’t see how an 8GB device will support the volume of data that would be required to make this phone useful.”

  1. There is a tech site posting a photo of this new iPhone packing showing it at 8gb. Now, will this supposed new iPhone sell for any where near $85.00, no, probably more around several hundred.

In any event, something has to happen with the 4 and 5c before June/july when Apple is aid to come out with 2 new iPhones.

  2. Another Cook strategy cooked up to cheapen the iPhone experience. I have no doubt it’s real. Apple has no idea how to make a compelling product so they have to resort to tactics used by snake oil salesmen to move crap.

  3. What’s amazing is the stock can be manipulated 1% on such a cheesy rumor. I wonder what would happen if the opposite rumor was started -the iPhone 6 to cost $100 more. Contract pricing will start at $299. I think analyst brains would explode trying to figure out higher profits on fewer units.

  4. Of course it makes sense, it’s going to replace the iPhone 4s (which is sadly still on the market) when the iPhone 6 comes out. It would be nice if they went ahead and dropped iPhone 4s now, and dropped the price on 5c instead of allowing people to accidentally buy iPhone 4s not realizing it’s insanely outdated.

    1. I can see dropping the 4S in the US to push it in India. With Apple trying to expand in that market it could cut the price to that of the 4 and concentrate the 4S sales there.

  5. I don’t know what all the fuss about the phone having 8GB of storage is about. The current 4S has 8GB, and my guess is folks are buying it. A cost per product threshold was likely crossed that allows Apple to offer the 5C instead of the 4S. This is good on a number if fronts including finally having all phones use the lightening connector.

  6. It’s a genius move: The less fortunate finally get access to a truly useful device, and with it they learn and grow and become more sophisticated. Thus, the iPhone 5c8 stokes them to break the shackles of repression, sales explode, they overthrow their governments to establish secular, productive economies, and finally defeat terrorism and world hunger. Then Apple stock drops 15%.

      1. Because like everyone on this site I have an opinion and think it cheapens the brand. And I don’t think the focus should be on a new model of the 5c. I have a 5s. I don’t need to buy one but can still share my sentiments just like you can. Deal with it

        1. People who think Apple is a “luxury brand” will continue to think so; it’s not like aluminum and glass are precious minerals; I personally think that seeing Apple as a “luxury brand” says more about you than it does Apple; kind of sad. I guess Panera Bread is “fine dining” too. You cannot be simultaneously exclusive and ubiquitous.

        2. Show me where I said I see apple as a luxury brand. Everything u said afterwards is irrelevant because I never said that. I say that a phone pretty much in Tim Cooks own words that did not meet expectations releases with a smaller memory size for $70 less is a bad idea. That’s my opinion and I’ll say and share what I feel whenever I want. As I told the previous person who had an issue with my comments, deal with it.

        3. Cheapen the 5c how? You obviously haven’t been around here long, otherwise you’d remember all the people complaining about the iPhone 4/4s/5 being sharp-edged and angular, what they really want is one with a smooth, curved back like a 3G/3Gs.
Those who buy such phones don’t need to get an opinion from you, they make their own minds up, based on price, appearance, and desirability.

        4. Yeap sorry to bust your bubble I’ve had an iPhone since 2007, I’m jo fine of those guys that you described and as I stated to the two previous complainers, I’ll share my opinion when and where I want. I’m not looking for any pathetic approval by faceless mdn blog posters. I like everyone else on here can share their opinion regardless of what you think. Btw I hardly doubt you speak for everyone on here. So again DEAL WITH the fact that people who have supported and bought apple products for years from time to time may not agree with something they do. Here’s one: if you don’t like what I say then it doesn’t apply to you and ignore it instead of trying to tell me when I should post my opinion. This goes for the lot of you. I’m done now. This is not worth commenting on another 5 seconds. Have a great day all!

  7. For We The Geeks, 8 GB is not enough. I have trouble with overfilling 32 GB. But then there’s my Mom. 8 GB is beyond her comprehension. For an average user, 8GB on an iOS devices is fine.

Apple’s 8GB iPhone 5c offers just 3.7GB less storage than Samsung’s “16GB” flagship Galaxy S4 – By Daniel Eran Dilger

Apple’s lower cost 8GB iPhone 5c scales down its entry cost by dropping 8GB, but ends up with only 3.7GB less available room for apps, pics and other user data as Samsung’s 16GB Galaxy S4, thanks to more efficient storage use and the lack of third party bundles and offers.
    . . .
For example, Microsoft’s Surface Pro hybrid tablet shipped with an impressive sounding 64GB of storage, but outside of Windows and other preinstalled software, the device only left around 36 percent of its installed storage capacity for the user.
    . . .
The worst offender in the bunch was one of the best selling Android phones: Samsung’s Galaxy S4 flagship, which ships with just 8.56GB free for the user. A primary reason: Samsung’s TouchWiz custom package of extra software designed to differentiate and brand the generic Android experience.
    . . .
Samsung wastes so much space on its 16GB Galaxy S4 that users are left with just a bit more space than Apple’s new, lower end 8GB iPhone 5c, despite Samsung boasting twice as much storage as Apple’s newly introduced model.

    Disgusting.
