Does the iPhone need a bigger screen?

Joe Brown, New York editor of Wired, discusses Apple’s development of new iPhone features with Emily Chang on Bloomberg Television’s “Bloomberg West.”

Well, there’s no doubt that phablets are really, really popular. Despite everybody making fun of the [Samsung] Galaxy Note when it first came out, they sold about half a million of them in no time flat.

So, Apple would be foolish not to pursue a larger screen phone, especially if they’re looking to get into the Chinese market which has been so tough for them to crack. The question is whether adding that SKU is going to dilute their penetration in America and whether it’s going to play well with the U.S. market that traditionally doesn’t love such a big phone.

I think this is Apple experimenting. I don’t think we’re going to see two different phone sizes next year. That’s just my gut.

MacDailyNews Take: There is a lot of talk in the video about why Apple iPhone “hasn’t done well” in China. As in most countries, Apple iPhone owns the high end smartphone market in China. It “hasn’t done well” in unit share simply because Apple doesn’t play the unit share game. Apple doesn’t make cheap, low margin phones, and try to make it up in volume.

Apple seeks to delight customers, not just pile them up for piling’s sake.

In fact, Apple has done quite well in China and they are doing better all the time as China’s population slowly grows richer and they are able to afford high-end products. Also of note, the iPhone 5c is selling better in relation to iPhone 5s than iPhone 4s sold in relation to iPhone 5. This tired meme that iPhone 5c is “not selling” is simply not supported by facts. iPhone 5c is not a cheap iPhone for emerging markets. Anyone who judges it as such has no earthly idea what they’re talking about.

All that said, by now, of course the world’s most valuable company should have more diverse range of iPhone display sizes available to the public. Besides the old ‘that’s what my friends/family told me to get,’ a larger screen is the number one reason given when we ask people why they settled for a fragmandroid phone instead of getting themselves a superior iOS device.

  1. Give people a choice and let the market decide.

I would love an ipad mini with phone function, I carry mine with me all the time anyway and love the extra real estate over my phone.

And no, I wouldn’t hold it by my ear, but I don’t hold my phone to my ear either, I use a bluetooth earpiece.

  2. Here’s what I want…

Keep the current size. Introduce another size, say maybe 5″. Add voice to the iPads. Release a (waterproof) iWatch that also has voice and data (as well as Bluetooth).

Pound on the carriers to offer free dynamic activation switching. Allow me to go to any device and make it the active phone on the account at any time (with no additional charge). If I’m out in the water, I can make my waterproof iWatch my phone. If I’m going for a run or active without my iPad, my iPhone becomes my phone. If I’m in my car my iPad mini becomes my phone. If I’m at home, my iPad Air becomes my phone.

  3. I like what they did with the iPad Mini. They have basically the Pro version and the regular version.

I would like to see a 5″ and a 4″ with both models having a Pro version at $200 and basic version at $100.

  4. All those people who don’t like choice, please don’t bother to comment. Then you’ll be happy with whatever Apple gives you and it will leave more room on this forum for the ~99% of people who see the value in multiple size options, just as Apple offers a diverse family of iPods and a (somewhat) diverse family of laptops.

  5. I am in Shanghai right now. I am hard-pressed in the office to see anyone who has something other than an iPhone. No managers or higher have anything other than Apple iPhone products. The lower-level employees often have android products. Apple is doing very well in this market.

  6. Apple will always have a 5s sized screen. They will also have a larger sized model or 2. They aren’t about to start putting out crap. Since iPod there have been very few stumbles. There is no doubt if Apple introduces a 5″ screen and a 6″ screen model iPhone they will sell a ton. It is about making the product correctly in form and function. If the 5s is the form factor and the screen offerings increase in size, I would be thrilled. They will retool the 4 and create a new version of those also. I believe the could offer 3 models at any given time and do REALLY REALLY well. That seems to keep with the full line of products. iPods mini, nano, touch, iPad, iPad Air, iPad Mini/2, Soon iPad Pro, Macbook Air, Macbook, Macbook Pro. iMac , mac mini, mac Pro…so why not iPhone5c , phone 5s, iPhone Pro 6 Air ?? One can wish.
