iPhone 5 design still not finalized, still no big screen, still no metal back, still on track for October release, say sources

“Despite some rumors to the contrary, according to our sources Apple still hasn’t finalized the design of the next generation iPhone 5 (or whatever Apple ends up calling iPhone 5,1). No giant screen,” Rene Ritchie reports for iMore. “No 16:9 aspect ratio. No metal back.”

“Apple typically makes extensive use of the prototyping process, which could well be the source of inconsistent rumors (perhaps best seen in the conflicting iPhone rumors last year),” Ritchie reports. “Currently, the new, smaller dock connector is being implemented, but no changes to screen size or aspect ratio have been decided on. And yes, it still has a Home button.”

Ritchie reports, “Once again we’re hearing that if the screen size does change, it won’t be by a lot (no larger than 4-inches). We’ve heard nothing to indicate a planned change in the aspect ratio either way… October is still the planned launch period, alongside the 7-inch iPad.”

MacDailyNews Take: According to whispers we’ve heard, any smaller iPad, if produced, would most likely feature a 7.85-inch screen. As for the next-gen iPhone, the rumors are so hot and heavy that the only “certainty” we can nail down with any confidence is 4G LTE capability.

  1. If the phone is set for release in October, the design was finalized many months ago.

If the design wasn’t finalized, which I highly doubt, then we wouldn’t be seeing a new iPhone until next year.

    1. – its because last iPhone there were two models – just incase something wasn’t ready remember – lol

this time Apple has four designs and one of them is still not prepared – right – double lol

    2. +100500.

Those iMore guys are ignorant nonsense gossipers. It takes like half of the year to bring new iPhone/iPad to mass production. So for October release, the new iPhone had to be finalized no later than in April.

  2. The iPhone 5 will have a 4.5″ screen which will allow me to do so many other things on it rather than be limited to squinting into a tiny 3.5″ slit.

Come on Apple, get with the program – small screen phones are deader than RIM’s BlackBerrry.

    1. agreed! I got an iPhone in July of 2010, Samsung sent me a free galaxy s2 last November…loved the large screen and had no problem using it except android just isn’t iOS so I switched back to my iPhone 4. A 4″ screen should be the minimum of the next iPhone

  3. Apple rumours, once were a lot of fun.
Now, its better to hear what we the customers, dream up or just wish for.

However, these stories from supposedly reliable sources have become a major joke on readers. Seems no one knows anything.

  4. I believe it will have a 4 inch screen. I’m not sure why folks can’t get their hand around a 4 inch screen? I have used a friends 4.5 inch phone and had no problem holding it. But knowing Apple, they won’t go as big as the other guys unless they can make it look like they thought of it. My 4S screen is a bit small. I’m guessing that they are going to do a small iPad by Christmas. I’m ok with my new iPad as I was with the first two generations. But I think it would really sell like crazy if they get it out there soon. Don’t know if I’d ever get one but if Apple makes it you know it will be special.

  5. No larger screen, no iphone whatever it’s name is for me. I would be surprised if we don’t see a 4 inch iphone later this year. I really don’t think the larger screen size is going to be so overwhelming to navigate as some of the people on this site would have us believe.

  6. I just picked up an HTC X One, the phone is awesome !!!
Though I have a Mac , and an iPad , the iPhone to me , is
out dated , The Android 4.0 ice cream sandwich is a big
    Improvement , I must admit , obviously , it’s a brand new
phone , but if Apple stays with a small 3.5 inch display ,
    they’re making a mistake , yes , they sold 35 million units,
but that doesn’t mean they still won’t , or More !!!

A 4 inch screen should be perfect .. The competition is
gaining ground , you must be able to evolve , when I look
at my iPhone now, it looks ridiculous …

    1. While a slightly larger iPhone may be coming, and would likely be well executed by Ives’ team, the current iPhone is not nearly as ridiculous looking as the new Android monstrosities. I saw a girl talking into one the other day and it looked like she was taking into a CD cover.

I’m looking at an HTC Inspire right now, and it’s not terrible, but to reach the far corners with my thumb while holding it in one hand requires adjusting the grip, while I can do so MUCH easier with my 4S. I suppose I could adapt to a little bigger iPhone, but I am certainly not clamoring for one. Plus while I hate having to put a case on my iPhone, my work really demands it, so I use an Otterbox. Considering the added bulk, a large phone to start with plus a protective case and I would likely find it VERY cumbersome. iPhone 4S Otterbox = still acceptable…

  7. Also , battery life is no longer an issue with the Android 4.0,
which has made me reluctant to use it ,

Look out , Apple !! The competition is in your rear view
    mirror, and closing in !!!!!

    1. Why of course, to make millions on new dock connector sales! The only reason to fix something that isn’t broken is to make money and force 3rd party dock product makers to pay for a new license and temporarily hamstring Chinese counterfeiters.

    2. The cynic in me wants to agree with the conspiracy theorist.

The realist in me says that with smaller components there is more room for new features, and bigger batteries.

If Apple changes the dock connector, most of us will whine for a minute, but then we’ll either buy new gear and move on with our lives, or simply buy one of the many adapters that are sure to hit the market.

  8. My great grandmother in Lithuania confides in me that the new iPhone will be able to read the old 3.5 inch disk drives, giving it a mystical retro capability. Lets keep it between ourselves, eh.

  9. Unverified non-sense is all this story is. They are only saying what they don’t know, not what Apple knows or has. It’s to late in the year for Apple not to have a commitment to the parts that will go into the next generation iPhone. They have to be testing it by now so they can get certifications done before they put it on sale sometime this year. If they haven’t then there will be no next generation iPhone on sale this year. I don’t believe Apple will let that happen.

  10. Regardless of the validity, I like hearing about about an 86’d 16:9 ratio screen. It makes no sense in any way for better usability, and especially in aesthetics. All the mock-ups to date prove it to be a ghastly idea.
