“Apple is an iconic consumer electronics company with a string of massively successful products, but it could also become the world’s largest mobile processor company by the end of the year, according to a study due to be released by In-Stat later this week,” Agam Shah reports for IDG News Service.
“Apple was the world’s second largest mobile processor company behind Intel in 2011, benefitting from growing smartphone and tablet shipments and a meltdown in the PC market, according to In-Stat,” Shah reports. “If that trend holds and Apple’s iPhone and iPad shipments continue to grow at an unprecedented pace, Apple will likely overtake Intel as the world’s largest mobile processor company by the end of this year.”
Shah reports, “Apple does not have a large gap to overcome. The company last year shipped about 176 million processors in devices such as the iPad and iPhone, representing a 13.5 percent market share. Intel took the top spot with 181 million processors shipping in mobile products such as laptops, a 13.9 percent market share.”

MacDailyNews Take: Upon us, the changing of the guard is.
[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader “Dow C.” for the heads up.]
Apple’s always done hardware better than the specialist hardware makers, and software better than the specialist software makers. Now it’s doing chips better than the specialist chip makers!
By the end of the year?!? What? If they’re that close, Last year, Apple has already passed them.
“Upon us, the changing of the guard is.” .. Alzo Sprach Yoda
The force is strong in this one.
“If no mistake have you made, yet losing you are… a different game you should play.”
Had no clue Yoda foresaw Apple’s rise.
… except for the fact that Apple outsources those processors to Samsung, of all companies.
Ford designs many vehicles. Mexicans assemble some of them. So do Canadians. Are they Fords if they are not made in the USA?
Apple designs many processors. Some are made in Korea.
Actually, Samsung makes those processors in Texas. In their mind, that’s a whole other country.
Have you been to Texas? It’s a whole different planet/species. Texans are full of themselves. Look at Jerry Jones, George W, ad nauseum, literally.
Apple doesn’t manufacture mobile processors you dumb f***.
“Processors in use” you dumb ass.
Don’t you have a 7″ tablet to track down?
Another ridiculous reporting.
Apple licenses SoC Core and Graphics.
Apple buys mobile CPU from Intel.
Apple does not sell any CPU.
Count Intel CPU for embedded devices?
Report compares Apples to potatoes.
