“The Messages app introduced alongside OS X Mountain Lion will become exclusive to the new OS after the current beta period has finished, French site Consomac says it has learned,” MacNN reports.
“Buried in text strings for the app is a future alert for users of the Lion-based beta,” MacNN reports. “‘Thank you for participating in the Messages Beta program. With the inclusion of Messages in OS X Mountain Lion, the Messages Beta program has ended,’ the notice reads. ‘To continue using Messages, please visit the Mac App Store and purchase OS X Mountain Lion.'”

Apple’s OS X Mountain Lion drops support for several older Mac models – February 17, 2012
As long as beta users on Lion can then revert back to iChat. Won’t be a problem for me though as I’ll happily upgrade to Mtn Lion. 😉
They won’t. Apple doesn’t facilitate reverting iOS to previous versions, nor Apps from the AppStore. They’ll be quite happy screwing you to force you to spend another $30 for an upgrade. Oh, and if your Mac doesn’t qualify you’ll have to buy a new or you’ll be SOL.
Considering you can ALREADY revert to iChat by choosing to uninstall Messages from the Messages menu in Lion, I think it’s safe to say that you’re a troll.
Apple has been good to me. Sure, Apple has made some mistakes. But I don’t share your bile, and I strongly suspect that I am in the majority in this instance.
I like how you phrase that. “Screwing you to for you to spend $30 [for an OS] upgrade.” $30? Really? For a major OS upgrade that you can install on multiple machines? When is the last time you paid $30 for a MINdows upgrade? $80-$100/license if you’re lucky. $30 is well worth the value-add in my opinion.
Not snappy at all.
If the beta works fine on Lion, why remove it? Very unlike Apple to do this – all for a piddly $30 software sale
The problem is that the Messages Beta will run on almost twice as many Mac models as will support Mountain Lion. Those users will be cut off from iMessage for no good technical reason about six months from now.
First of all, this is effectively a rumor – MacNN reports that French site Consomac “says it has learned.” Take that for what it is worth.
Second, it hasn’t happened, yet (if it is going to happen at all). Why start griping about rumored trouble six months down the road regarding a piece of beta software that just became available. No current Mac user has a “right” to this software on their current version of Mac and Mac OS X.
And for all we know Apple may eventually add support for the Intel 950 chip or whatever their reason was to exclude some C2D Macs.
I keep thinking they just got the Beta out to developers while still working on other stuff.
What? A girl can dream…..
$20 says it’ll just be $.99 for Lion like FaceTime was for Snow Leopard.
I don’t care for the user interface. I prefer the multi window use of iChat when chatting with more than one person. Of course multi windows seems to be loosing favor at iOSified Apple.
