Beleaguered RIM claims BlackBerry App World more profitable than Google’s Android Market

“Research in Motion announced on Tuesday that its BlackBerry App World is the second most profitable mobile application store behind Apple’s App Store, beating out Google’s Android Market,” Sam Oliver reports for AppleInsider.

“At a developer’s conference in Amsterdam, new RIM CEO Thorsten Heins was joined by vice president of developer relations, Alec Saunders, who declared App World to be the second-most-profitable mobile platform,” Oliver reports. “He said that’s based on the fact that RIM has more paid downloads available than the Android Market, where most software options are free, according to PaidContent.

Oliver reports, “Heins, who took over as CEO of RIM last month, said on Tuesday that 65 percent of the population of Europe, the Middle East and Africa are still using feature phones, which he believes gives RIM an opportunity to regain some ground lost to iOS and Android. Though RIM was once dominant in the corporate world, it has lost traction there with major companies like Halliburton, as AppleInsider exclusively reported this week that the energy service corporation plans to phase out thousands of employee BlackBerrys and switch to Apple’s iPhone.”

      1. Hmm, so he’s a “lib a$$wipe” because the facts about Halliburton (irrespective of my or your political leaning) are in the shadiness category of Goldman Sachs? Or is it because it appeared to comment on a corporation that a former VP had more than a few connections to, and therefore, a talking points mentality says attack, disregard facts…and attack with nasty words, that shows you mean it!!
Doesn’t sound like much thinking behind the attack, more dogma, though there may be more that isn’t said.

  1. “profitable” is a very vague term. Who’s it profitable for? RIM? The Devs? I’m not sure thats true – when you have a million playing Angry Birds on Android and everytime they launch it there’s an ad the developer profits from… which is now more profitable?
I prefer to buy my apps, and don’t like ads, but I don’t think they are using the right measurement here and that’s misleading.

    1. Android Market also has many ripoffs Angry Birds and other popular apps. Many of those “free” apps are there to entice the unwary into downloading malware.

Can we consider the rewards of malware to be profits to the perpetrators?

  2. “He [RIM CEO] said that’s based on the fact that RIM has more paid downloads available than the Android Market, where most software options are free, according to PaidContent.“
Total non sequitur there. It’s like conflating units shipped with units sold.
Using his “logic,” the Android Marketplace could claim to be more profitable simply by slapping a price tag of $100 million on one of their downloads. “See, more profitable. Presto!”

  3. Watch the keynote. His argument is that bb appworld is profitable for devs. That may well be true.
What struck me was the jobsian style of the keynote… but without Steves charisma. Steve showed the world how a presentation should be done. The big test for RIMthough, is in execution. Steve also had a knack for perfect execution. RIM have done some good stuff in the past but right no, even thougj QNX is cool, they are trailing in their ability to deliver and hell, playbook OS2 needs to be damn good or their very nice bit of hardware development will be history.
