Uh, no, Amazon is not the new Apple

“Over the last few months I have heard and read many comments about the idea that Amazon is the new Apple,” Tim Bajarin writes for Tech.pinions.

“Amazon is not the new Apple. The reasons for this are many,” Bajarin writes. “Now, don’t get me wrong. I have great respect for Amazon and Jeff Bezos. However, Jeff Bezos’s is not the second coming of Steve Jobs and he would be the first one to tell you that. Amazon’s business is very different from Apple’s and though they have some similar goals, such as creating an ecosystem of products and services for their customers, their approaches differ greatly.”

Bajarin writes, “One thing that really distinguishes Apple from Amazon and their competitors, is that Apple is a leader and all of the others are followers ”

  1. The key is that Amazon is in it for the money. Period.

Apple (Steve Jobs) said, make an insanely great product and you will make money (i.e. sell it).

focusing on the money is like focusing on where the puck iS!!!!

    Just a thought,

  2. I’m thinking Amazon is closer to the new Wal-Mart. But they’ll always be beholden to higher shipping prices than buying at a local store (where multiple items are drop shipped in bulk). Works if you’re in North Dakota with no Apple, Best Buy, Target or other similar store nearby. But I’m already buying less from Amazon than I did last year because the shipping costs are rising.

    1. That’s what I never understand about the so-called “level playing field” for online stuff & brick & mortar stores with sales tax since you DO have to pay for shipping usually. Something you are not paying for at a B&M. Having to pay for both sales tax and shipping at Amazon at some point in 2012 in California is gonna hurt. This might slow down the Amazon machine a bit.

  3. It should be crystal clear to anyone with half a brain that the morons who call themselves “tech analysts” these days will say absolutely anything to draw more traffic to their websites. Sites like MDN wouldn’t even exist without these idiots.

But speaking of MDN, how long before there is no news at all on this website, just ads?

Listen up, MDN. The glut of ads is really, really obnoxious.

      1. I used to use ClicktoFlash, but I ran into too many websites that didn’t function properly unless ClicktoFlash was disabled. Turning it on and off all the time didn’t work for me. But I might change my mind if websites keep filling their pages with in-your-face advertising.

  4. Since Netflix and Reed Hastings were hailed as the new Apple and Steve Jobs by so many of these same (and desperate) analysts last summer, I wonder if Amazon is now the new Netflix. Netflix does lease the Amazon server.

  5. Why all the hate on Amazon? No, they are not the next Apple, and Bezos is not the next Steve Jobs. What Amazon is, however, is a well run, profitable company with tremendous critical mass and an eye on the long term. The shopping experience on Amazon is the easiest of any place on the web, and shipping is free if you punch in super saver shipping (or if you have Amazon Prime). And you can find virtually anything there, usually cheaper than anywhere else. (I have no stake in Amazon, I’m just a satisfied customer. I’m also a satisfied Apple customer many times over.) That they’re in a business that competes (nominally) with Apple is only a small part of who they are. There’s room enough in this world for multiple successful companies, and I’m fine with Amazon being one of them.

  6. I am sick & tire of comparison to all Apple. why do you want to compare with Apple? every company is different. they have different strategies, rules, and plans. of course, Apple could be the best bench marking company for all. but please, stop doing this. I think that Amazon is great company as much as Apple. the reason is that two companies are focused on different point of views, stuff to sell. don’t blame on kindle fire. I think that it is great product which uses different mobile OS. I hope that they will be huge successful. I don’t know whether you are Apple fanboy or not ( I don’t even care who you are by the way), every big company has huge potential. you just blame on any one. if you don’t own company, don’t even talk business. you have no idea.

  7. In answer to the two Amazon employees above, it gets “hate” because analysts, tech sites, and bloggers are claiming that a., it’s the new Apple, b., Jeff Bezos is the new Steve Jobs, and c., the Fire will be a wild success that steals the iPad’s thunder(Amazon itself is joining in on this particular claim).

All of these are contradicted by the reality that Amazon isn’t the new Apple, Jeff isn’t the new Steve, and the Fire is crappy bargain-bin filler that isn’t stealing anybody’s anything.

  8. Amazon sells stuff. Stuff that it purchases wholesale from others or stuff that others sell using its marketplace.

Apple designs and integrates amazing electronics and software into cohesive ecosystems.

Anyone who is attempting to equate the two in any way (other than being successful commercial companies) is hitting the weed.
