Google’s Schmidt: ‘Android is ahead of iOS already’

“Google chairman Eric Schmidt has come out all guns blazing (and pointing in Cupertino’s direction) in defence of Android, insisting at the Le Web expo in Paris that the mobile platform is the dominant player in the market,” Paul Lamkin reports for Pocket-lint. “‘Android is ahead of iOS already,’ he said. ‘In terms of unit volume, new ICS features, prices are lower, with more vendors, more pricepoints – do I need to continue the list?'”

“Schmidt also talked down Google+ as a direct rival to Facebook, instead insisting that the Big G’s social network was taking a different approach,” Lamkin reports. “‘Facebook has really moved the ball forward and it’s useful for any company to have competition. We saw an opportunity for something that has more privacy controls than Facebook does,’ he said.”

MacDailyNews Take: Android is ahead of iOS in everything except originality, consistency, marketing, voice recognition, voice control, artificial intelligence, quality apps, security, profit margin, ecosystem, breadth of content, and end-user experience. Google can have the rest.

    1. Schmidt, don’t forget the thermonuclear weapon, Siri that Steve Jobs will deliver to sink your ship. And also the Terminator, Larry Ellison of Oracle has some big issues with you.

  1. “If you look at technology where one company comes to define one area, you’re usually better off doing something different that them. If you try and compete directly…you usually don’t win. You’re better off trying to define something new and offer a differentiator and that’s what we’re trying to do” according to Eric Schmidt.

Pity he did not learn from this insight when Google copied most of iOS in Android.

  2. Is it just me or has Schmidt been taking “talkin’ crap” lessons from Ballmer T McClown?

I guess it will come down to the companies who follow Microsoft’s lead (down the crapper) and those who don’t.

  3. Schidmt provides a list of things, but does not connect the dots. His argument, even on its face, is not persuasive. The price of hardware on which it runs means that Android is “ahead” of iOS? Great. I had no idea that the cheaper also meant better in tech. Thanks, Eric. I didn’t realize such a variable, which is not related to the quality of the software, was a factor in quality of the software.

  4. Eric is emitting his own Reality Distortion Field.

Apple does need someone to replace Steve as a headline grabber, to help elucidate Apple’s real advantages and have the media repeat them.

The media loves when one CEO disses another. Steve didn’t do it often, but when he did, he was sure it was a true advantage.

If you dis the opposition and you are wrong, it will bite you in the ass later (ie Michael Dell “sell the company” Balmer laughing at the iPhone).

But Apple does need to counter Eric’s headlines with some of their own. Steve knew that.
