Foxconn, Apple Inc.’s primary assembly partner, said its extensive global manufacturing footprint positions it to handle strong demand for the iPhone Duo, according to Bloomberg News’ Annabelle Droulers and Debby Wu.
Apple launched the $2,000 iPhone Duo earlier this month. Limited in-store inventory sold out quickly, and some online orders carried delivery estimates stretching to the end of January — among the longest delays for a new Apple product in the company’s modern history.
The Duo is assembled primarily at Foxconn’s “iPhone City” campus in central China, with the Taiwanese company also producing related components at other facilities in China and elsewhere. Foxconn’s rotating Chief Executive Officer Michael Chiang told Bloomberg TV that the company’s network of more than 240 sites across 24 countries enables timely responses to customer needs. “So I’m quite confident that we can fulfill the demand,” he said when asked about meeting holiday-season orders for the Duo. Chiang added that he expects artificial intelligence to support broader demand for consumer gadgets.
Chiang did not name Apple or the iPhone Duo specifically, though he is closely involved in the companies’ relationship. In October, he accompanied Apple Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan on a tour of the iPhone Duo production line at Foxconn’s central China facility.
