In a somewhat surprising move for students and educators gearing up for the academic year, Apple has quietly adjusted its education pricing for the MacBook Neo. The entry-level laptop — originally positioned as Apple’s most affordable Mac tailored specifically for the education market — has seen its educational discount effectively slashed in half.

Where the MacBook Neo previously offered students and faculty a significant $100 discount off its standard retail price, the entry-level 256GB model is now listed on Apple’s U.S. Education Store at $649 — just $50 below the $699 standard retail price. This marks a noticeable shift from its initial promotional pricing at launch, raising the barrier to entry for budget-conscious buyers looking to step into the Mac ecosystem.

What You Get: Specs and Features

Despite the price increase, the MacBook Neo remains a highly capable machine designed for everyday academic tasks, light productivity, and media consumption. Under the hood, Apple has packed impressive mobile performance into an ultra-portable chassis:

• A18 Pro Silicon: Powered by the same high-efficiency architecture found in Apple’s very capable mobile devices, featuring a 6-core CPU (2 performance and 4 efficiency cores), a 5-core GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and a 16-core Neural Engine built to drive Apple Intelligence features.

• Display & Build: Features a 13.0-inch Liquid Retina display with IPS technology, running a 2408-by-1506 resolution at 219 ppi with up to 500 nits of brightness. It weighs in at a lightweight 2.7 pounds and measures just 0.5 inches thin.

• Memory & Storage Configurations: Comes base-configured with 8GB of unified memory (with 60GB/s bandwidth). Storage starts at 256GB SSD for the base tier ($649 Education / $699 Retail) and scales up to 512GB SSD ($749 Education / $799 Retail).

MacDailyNews Note: Amazon currently offers a $10 discount on MacBook Neo non-education prices (256GB: $689, 512GB $789) here.

• Keyboards & Security: The entry-level model includes standard full-height function keys on the Magic Keyboard, while higher-tier configurations unlock Touch ID for instant biometric authentication and secure Apple Pay transactions.

• Battery & Power: Offers up to 16 hours of video streaming (or up to 11 hours of wireless web browsing) powered by a 36.5-watt-hour battery paired with a 20W USB-C power adapter.

• Connectivity & Camera: Equipped with Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 6.0, a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, dual-beamforming microphones, and dual spatial audio speakers. Port selection includes one USB 3 USB-C port (up to 10Gb/s with DisplayPort support for one 4K external monitor), one USB 2 USB-C port, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

• Color Finishes: Available in four vibrant finishes—Silver, Blush, Citrus, and Indigo.

The Bottom Line

While the $50 education discount still offers modest savings compared to general retail prices, the price hike makes the MacBook Neo a slightly harder sell for institutional buyers and students on tight budgets. Nonetheless, with its fanless design, lightweight body, and solid performance powered by the A18 Pro chip, it remains one of the sleekest ultra-portable options available for school and light work.

MacDailyNews Take: MacBook Neo has quite some play in its price elasticity.
