MLS unveils key 2027 sprint season matches on Apple TV as Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami opens historic calendar shift

All eyes on Apple TV+ as Inter Miami's Lionel Messi & Co. kicks off Major League Soccer season

Major League Soccer has revealed cornerstone matchups for its 2027 “Sprint Season,” the abbreviated campaign that will bridge the league’s traditional spring-to-fall schedule and its long-planned shift to a summer-to-spring calendar aligned with Europe’s top leagues. The details, previewed on Apple TV’s MLS Countdown, feature weekly rivalry games and a high-profile opening night starring Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.

Inter Miami will host FC Cincinnati on Friday, February 19, 2027, at Nu Stadium in Miami in a standalone match that launches the truncated regular season. The rest of Matchday 1 follows over the weekend of February 20–21. The four-month sprint runs through early May and serves as the transition after the 2026 campaign ends with MLS Cup in December.

Each of the league’s 30 clubs (15 per conference) will play a 14-game regular-season schedule consisting solely of intra-conference matchups. Teams face every opponent in their conference once — seven home and seven away — with no cross-conference games. The regular season concludes on May 8 with “Decision Day,” highlighted by the Hudson River Derby between New York City FC and the New York Red Bulls. The top eight teams in each conference advance to single-elimination Audi MLS Cup Playoffs in May, culminating in the 2027 MLS Cup presented by Audi. Sprint Season results will also determine qualification for the 2028 Concacaf Champions Cup (five berths) and the 2028 Leagues Cup (18 teams, nine from each conference).

Among the headline fixtures announced, the LA Galaxy will host Los Angeles FC on April 10 in the “El Trafico” derby. The schedule emphasizes weekly rivalries, a format designed to maintain intensity during the compressed calendar.

All matches, along with studio programming and related content, will stream exclusively on Apple TV as part of a standard Apple TV subscription, with no separate MLS Season Pass required. This continues the model introduced for the 2026 season after MLS and Apple adjusted their multi-year partnership, folding full access into the main service for subscribers in more than 100 countries and regions (with no blackouts in the U.S. and Canada). English and Spanish commentary is available, with some matches offering French options.

MLS owners approved the calendar realignment in November 2025 following a multi-year review and fan/owner surveys that showed strong support. Commissioner Don Garber has described the change as “one of the most important decisions in our history.” The shift aims to better synchronize player transfers with the global summer window, reduce conflicts with FIFA international breaks, free players for summer national-team duty, and stage the playoffs and MLS Cup in May — when the North American sports calendar is less crowded than the traditional fall window dominated by the NFL and college football. The first full season under the new timetable will run from mid-to-late July 2027 through May 2028, including a midwinter break (limited games in December and early February, none in January) to account for weather in northern markets.

The Sprint Season is expected to crown an MLS Cup champion while setting the stage for the league’s deeper integration with the global soccer calendar. Full schedules, including all home/away designations, were being finalized for later release, with clubs also evaluating season-ticket strategies that may bundle the abbreviated 2027 campaign with the longer 2027–28 season.
