Rush Limbaugh on Steve Jobs potentially being named TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year

Mac, iPhone, and iPad user Rush Limbaugh today covered the possibility that Steve Jobs may be named TIME Magazine’s “Person of the Year” on what, since its inception on August 1, 1988, is the highest-rated talk radio show in the United States. The 3-hour Rush Limbaugh Show airs daily on a network of approximately 590 AM and FM affiliate stations. The program is also broadcast worldwide on the U.S. Armed Forces Radio Network. A November 2008 poll by Zogby International found that Rush Limbaugh was the most trusted news personality in the nation.

From the live transcript, Limbaugh said, in part:

[TIME Magazine] never have named somebody who has passed away as Person of the Year. Jobs might be the first. Zuckerberg, [last year’s POTY], I think that choice just illustrates what the media has become.

Pop culture of the moment.

The way that decision’s made, “Okay ‘Person of the Year,’ okay, we gotta throw a party for ‘Person of the Year.’ Who can we get to show up, what’s the best guest list we could get? Oh, let’s go Zuckerberg, a lot of people, Facebook is fascinating, want to meet Zuckerberg,” so that might be it. Who knows how these people go about making their choice.

I was up for it one year back in the mid-nineties, and I think I lost out to the computer. But I do know I was up for it one year. It’s never gonna happen, but so much of media now is just pure pop culture, fad popularity of the moment in terms of ‘Person of the Year.’ If you look at any of these top 100 lists, any of these publications, most influential, most powerful, you can pretty much tell that it’s basically a guest list, a hoped-for guest list at the next party.

  1. Coming so soon after Steve Job’s passing – where TIME magazine devoted nearly a whole issue to writing about Steve – it’ll be a tough job for its writers, following so soon, to come up with content about Steve that they haven’t already written in TIME’s obituary edition on Steve. I do fee, however, that in terms of impact in the world, Steve was the man of the year’s attention for 2011.

  2. Uh-oh… Rush, apple, Steve jobs, in same article!

    Firestorm!!!!!!

And for those that don’t want to read the article, etc.
Rush was bashing time, not jobs/apple.

He also defended apple when a caller tried to paint apple users as a cult..

        1. That’s absurd, and quite presumptuous of you. When speaking on matters of truth, I care little about peoples opinions. Something being true because you want it to be true is irrational, and I don’t partake in that either. When these websites expose a lie, they cite their sources. Truths are verifiable. Lets summarize. Rush spouts a lie, website exposes lie, gives evidence, gives source, source is verifiable. That makes it a truth. Why does this need to be tracked? By the way, I typically vote Republican. Don’t be such a presumptuous dick.

    1. A dead clock is right twice a day. RL is a phallic-sucking, blowharded, repulsive jack*** who should not only be taken off the air but incarcerated for treason. He is the most despicable voice in broadcasting. But, yes, I share his opinions on Apple and the media.

      1. But he does support the U.S. Constitution, and in the past, has cited it as the reason why he is still on the air.

The Oracle at Delphi needed the breath of Apollo to confer wisdom. As he says, he has talent on loan from God.

The problem with right-wing commentators is not that they are so wrong. It is that left-wing commentators are so lame.

    2. On a semi-related note:

‎”You’re blowing it with Fox News, The axis today is not liberal and conservative, the axis is constructive-destructive, and you’ve cast your lot with the destructive people. Fox has become an incredibly destructive force in our society.”–Steve Jobs to Rupert Murdoch

    3. Rush is right…sometimes. Don’t get all sanctimonious on us implying that he is an oracle of wisdom and completely devoid of hypocrisy. Rush spouts a lot of bull, too. To be fair, most talk show TV personalities spout at least some bull in order to sensationalize the news and reel in like-minded viewers. If you buy into everything that any of them say, then you are accepting misinformation and failing to think for yourself.

Of course, you won’t like this post. But I don’t really care, F10T12, because you are more full of bull than your idol.

  3. We need equality under the law. From now on, laws that apply to the private sector must apply to Congress, including whistleblower, conflict-of-interest and insider-trading laws. Trading on nonpublic government information should be illegal both for those who pass on the information and those who trade on it. (This should close the loophole of the blind trusts that aren’t really blind because they’re managed by family members or friends.)

No more sweetheart land deals with campaign contributors. No gifts of IPO shares. No trading of stocks related to committee assignments. No earmarks where the congressman receives a direct benefit. No accepting campaign contributions while Congress is in session. No lobbyists as family members, and no transitioning into a lobbying career after leaving office. No more revolving door, ever.

This call for real reform must transcend political parties. The grass-roots movements of the right and the left should embrace this. The tea party’s mission has always been opposition to waste and crony capitalism, and the Occupy protesters must realize that Washington politicians have been “Occupying Wall Street” long before anyone pitched a tent in Zuccotti Park.

Author’s name purposely withheld because some people have preconceived notions based on falsehoods and exaggerations that have been fed to them by a corrupted mainstream media.

For those interested, the author’s name and the entire article is here.

    1. The purported author is Sarah Palin. I say purported because who knows who actually wrote the piece. Politicians often employ professional writers for speeches, press releases, etc.

The words have merit, however, and I am willing to give Palin the benefit of the doubt. But words are cheap – what steps is she going to take to advocate for that reform? Is she willing to call out her own party members in Congress?

    2. Make it even simpler – no bribes of any sort, including 3rd pallrty ads

Only individual donations to a max of, say $500, including the candidate

Absolutely no corporate, union, organization, interest ads or donations of any sort, dire toy or indirectly

And make politicians lying a crime (put claims in writing) – bared from public office for 4 hrs first offense, then 8, 12 years

And all electoral districts drawn neutrally by judges

All actually quite simple altho first may require amending first amendment to add ‘except where such limitations can be shown to be reasonanle in a free and democratic society’

And it was a delightful surprise to see Sarah write the post above, hopefully she will push this thru altho her track record for completion is a concern

        1. Why attack me when the duplicity of his statements are obvious?
I’m not attacking anyone here, or defending Rush, just showing hypocrisy, which oddly enough, you just exemplified.

Now if by ‘tunnel vision’ you mean I have no ability to see beyond the Conservative agenda, you are wrong.
I came to that viewpoint BECAUSE of seeing many other ways of running governments.

Also, as far as voting, I almost always Republican in national elections, but I don’t think I have ever voted straight ticket on the state or local level. Too many good moderate Democrats in my area doing their best to vote out just because a no-name Republican is running.

        2. Hey TowerTone,

You are one of my favorite people posting on MDN. Mark Levin says it best, “don’t waste your time arguing with liberal drones”. The reason he says is they are brainwashed nut jobs that have zero interest in learning a thing or broadening their horizons. They’re on an all out mission these days to destroy the US and take away rights and private property. We have to stop them. In Mark’s opinion, you should argue with an undecided person but not a liberal drone, just a complete waste of time. If you don’t listen to Mark too you should. He’s every bit as good as Rush or better. And I really like Rush. I would never vote for Democrat again no matter what after what they have done to this country over the last three years. 5 if you count 2006 liberal-commie take over of congress. I hope you can think about that the next time you vote. I’ll never pull the lever for a demonrat, ever.

    1. Derek Commie has been posting his lame liberal BS here for a long time. Who cares what he or any lib thinks at this point. Landslide 2012 loss for them is coming. Liberalism is definitely a mental disease.

  4. Rush – “I was up for it one year back in the mid-nineties, and I think I lost out to the computer. But I do know I was up for it one year.”

He must still be experiencing a fair amount of butt-hurt over that… poor fella.

  5. @Derk Currie,

Derk, smart by a half. SO intelligent in some areas, and an utter idiot in others. You are a political hack!!

You say neo-con I say say “liberalism is a mental disorder”

  6. Understand that one opinion should be as valid as another. I may not like Rush but he does contribute to the dialog. The US thrives on discussion not one mindset so give all their due your opinion is no more valid than any other

      1. Except—and I just realized this—if opinions are equally valid and votes are just opinions, then the REAL political power rests with those who psychologically manipulate voters by planting plausible opinions in, say, the blogosphere; and who is better at that then right-wingers…

        Wait…

        1. And who is better at it in the media the left-wingers?
          And movies?
          And music?

You seem like a sharp woman, but keep in mind that Conservative talk radio is a reaction to the left’s near-monopoly on almost all other forms of media, beginning in the late 50s on through the 80s, and anyone that has spent any time listening to Rush knows that his number one target is not the liberal politicians or even their voters, but the media that gives them a pass to do as they please.

  7. Yada yada yada. The left wing does not control the media. Ever heard of Rupert Murdoch? S.I.Newhouse? Knight-Ridder? How about Hearst and Ganett? All card carrying Republicans.

  8. Yes, I have heard of those.
Where do they get their news?
    Ever heard of Reuters? AP?
    NYC, LA, Chicago, Atlanta?
Do you understand how newspapers work?
Of course some sell right slanted papers in conservative areas.
    It’s a business.

  9. I used to work for Newhouse and Knight Ridder in New York. I just remember being the only Democrat in the room at every meeting or conference. I was working with papers and TV from coast to coast, and always had to keep my politics to myself. I can’t imagine things have changed in the past few years. News feeds are one thing, editorial control and influece has mostly been in the hands of the righties. I’m sick of all the whining about the liberal press. It’s a popular myth used to strike out at compassion and forward thinking. Uprofitable sentiments for big business and right wing politicians.

    1. “I’m sick of all the whining about the liberal press. It’s a popular myth used to strike out at compassion and forward thinking. Uprofitable sentiments for big business and right wing politicians.”

It was probably not your politics they didn’t like, and that’s just an asinine statement to make.
      ‘Forward thinking’ my ass….
