Next-gen Apple TV references discovered in iOS 5 file system

“We’ve been hoping for a new Apple TV since Apple began transitioning its iOS device lineup to dual-core A5 processors, and we now have some compelling evidence for a next-generation Apple TV being in the works,” Mark Gurman reports for 9to5Mac.

“Deep inside the iOS 5 file system is a reference to a Apple TV 3,1,” Gurman reports. “This would be an upgrade from the current Apple TV’s 2,1 marking.”

Gurman reports, “The number changing from 2 to 3 represents major changes, and with the Apple TV recently gaining a fully re-designed case, we expect this upgrade to mainly consist of internal changes.”

      1. I know! Does it mirror anything and everything on the iPhone?

That sounds awesome. I can picture my brother and I battling over the tv airplay link. “look at this” “wait, look at this first”

  1. If it doesn’t appear in the next few weeks, it won’t show up until early next year. As I recall, Apple has not previously changed their holiday line-up after the iPod announcement in the fall.

Interesting that there was so little (no?) mention of AppleTV at the iPhone release, when it is so significantly connected to the mobile devices.

    1. It was mentioned with AirPlay mirroring…but that’s about it. Mirroring makes the Apple TV relevant with all the Internet connected TVs (and game consoles) already in the market.

  2. I saw a comment on another site about this article wishing for apps (heard that before) and Siri. Now THAT would be amazing. Talk to your ATV for all kinds of stuff: weather, webpages, calendar etc. with iCloud integration. Amazing possibilities I that was coming!

BTW, they’re saying that Siri requires the beefed-up capabilities of the iPhone 4S (which some have questioned since the Siri app works on the older devices until it’s shut down next Friday). If that is so, theoretically Siri would still work on the iPad 2 since it shares the same processor. But no mention of extending Siri beyond the phone yet. When do you think that’s coming. It’s already incorporated into iOS, so the iPad (and ATV) seems like less of a stretch than Macs, so more likely to get Siri sooner.

    1. I think Siri has already been incorporated into other systems. namely Apple’s Customer serive. Call 1-800 My Apple, and listen to the computer that describes it self as “able to understand whole sentences.” Try telling it what to do, asking it to wait, etc. It even recognizes if you are talking to someone else near the phone (it says “Are you talking to me? I can hear you, but it seems you are speaking to someone else”

      pretty impressive

  3. The iTV 3 is going to be completely redesigned. I saw photos of silicone cases made from leaked documents made by a top chinese supplier. The iTV will be slimmer, have a curved aluminum back, and an elongated home button that you can slide your finger on and pretend it’s your girlfriend (or what you imagine a girlfriend to feel like if you had one). BENM.AT is painstakingly working up a prototype and they SWEAR it matches the specs exactly. You heard it here first…

    1. Really? Jut like there where iPhone 5 parts and cases leaked for a whole new design and that wasn’t true either u can’t read into all the rumors that go around about apple products cause 90% of them are fake. Apple will let us know when they want to. Unless of course someone leaves a apple tv 3 in a bar or something lol

  4. Get an AppleTV now with Amex points. Generally, you get 20% off. My AppleTV cost me the equivalent of 16,000 Amex points = $80.00. When the new one comes out, you can just move the older one to another TV like I plan to do.
