Apple’s iPhone 4S set to smash all-time sales record

“If you had any doubts that Apple would be able to beat the record 1.7 million iPhones sold in three days in June 2010, you can put them to rest,” Phillip Elmer Dewitt reports for Fortune.

“Despite early glitches that slowed down pre-orders, AT&T announced Friday it had taken orders for 200,000 iPhone 4S units in the first 12 hours — ‘the most successful iPhone launch we’ve ever had,'” P.E.D. reports. “iPhone 4 pre-orders last year were 10 times greater than the iPhone 3GS’s, and that was when AT&T was the iPhone’s only U.S. carrier.”

P.E.D. reports, “This year Apple is offering pre-orders to three carriers in the U.S.: AT&T, with 98.6 million wireless customers, Verizon with 106.3 million and Sprint with 52 million. Given the pent-up demand at Verizon and Sprint, it’s not much of a stretch to assume that Verizon also pre-sold at least 200,000 and Sprint, with half the customer base, another 100,000. That’s a total of half a million units in the U.S. alone. And that doesn’t count international pre-sales.”

  1. I am leery of extrapolating AT&T’s numbers to the other carriers. Since AT&T was the first to have the iPhone it is likely still enriched for iPhone early adopters and might thus have larger proportional iPhone4S sales.

    1. You could also assume that many AT&T customers are currently happy with their iPhone 4’s and 3GS’s. Verizon and Sprint users, on the other hand, have been waiting years for this weekend.

      Talk about pent-up demand!

    2. You could also make a case that AT&T’s pre order numbers are much lighter than the other carriers in that they aren’t even allowing current iPhone 4 customers the opportunity to pre-order til mid November. Siri, can you draw me a bloodbath.

  2. Do you guys think the white iPhone is too feminine? Do you see males with it in your circles, on the streets, etc? I want the white iPhone 4S so bad; the black one looks bleak in comparison but I’m afraid of being branded a nancy.

      1. Well…. My gay friend has the white. My “metrosexual” brother has the white.

I ordered black. I imagine you need to be stylish to sport the white phone. I’m blue collar. I know I couldn’t pull it off.

    1. My wife and son and I all have iPhone 4’s. When the White iPhone came out, I got one for me. I just ordered the white iPhone 4S 64GB, to take the place of wife’s, but she won’t be getting it. I’ll switch out the cards after activating; then my boy gets my previous white 4, and the wife gets the boy’s black 4. My wife’s previous, with a small crack, becomes the emergency spare.

The point is that I have had my white 4 for half a year, and people ALWAYS ask about it. My customers love it… Everyone notices it. I don’t feel ‘nancy’ at all… And my son, who used to prefer black, REALLY wants my old 4… And be is definitely not a Nancy boy…

Get what makes you happy… Life is too short. Take Steve Jobs’ advice, and stop trying to live someone else’s life. Stay foolish.

    2. Don’t you remember what Steve said?
” ……Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking…….”

  3. Getting one just for the Siri… If Siri turns out to be working well, it will be the Bomb!

I’d consider a white if the front were black.

Why isn’t Apple offering other colors. The color iMacs were a huge success.

  4. The white phone is as girly as a Mazda Miata. However, the most Nancy thing is having your masculinity threatened by the color of your phone. So, man-up and get whatever color you want and don’t worry about what other people think.

  5. Ordered mine as soon as I could on Friday. Having it delivered on Friday with any luck.
Replacing my old 3GS. My guess is that there will be many like myself switching their old phones.

  6. In the name of Jobs, I want to see Android’s marketshare reduced to low single-digits, for payback because of Schmidt’s treachery. Taking advantage of Jobs because of his health. Scum.

  7. I think some people forget that the cost of upgrading is so incredibly cheap. Sell your old one on craigslist/ebay or better yet, when traveling abroad, and you might get more for it used than buying the new iPhone.

For me, I upgrade every year, and have come pretty close to breaking even each year.

Given the monthly cost, the cost of the iPhone is so cheap, that *any* incremental upgrade is worth getting.

It also makes sense to get it on day #1. It sets your contract and upgrade cycle to the earliest point in time, and you’ll get more use of it before the next one comes out.

Really, just having the 64GB option was enough for me to upgrade.
