AT&T has announced that the company experienced extraordinary demand for iPhone 4S with more than 200,000 preorders in the first 12 hours alone.
According to AT&T, iPhone 4S is the most successful iPhone launch AT&T has ever had.
AT&T said in a statement, “It’s obvious customers like AT&T’s 4G network, which is the only one that lets their iPhone download twice as fast and talk and surf simultaneously.”

MacDailyNews Take: So, is this due to a Steve Jobs’ halo effect or did the general public actually grasp what makes iPhone 4S so special — even if it does look just like iPhone 4, isn’t named “5,” and lacks a silver model 😉 — or some mixture of both?
Regardless of the reason(s), congrats to Apple for yet another blockbuster success!

I followed the event as it was live-blogged. I watched no video. I was disappointed and surprised the Phone was called 4S and not 5. And a little upset that Macworld and Inhatko made comments about a lot of recapping and some attendees, who’d “heard it all before, being journalists” were falling asleep. When they started describing the actual phone, and its features, I let out a whoop and couldn’t wait to get one. Later on I saw Erin Burnett on her new show laughing how little had changed about the phone, saying nothing about the presentation, but mocking “Fanboyz” who’ll “buy anything Apple sells.” I wanted Elvis’s gun so I could shoot my TV set.
I’m one of those who pre-ordered in the first 12 hours. I ordered it from Apple’s site though so I don’t know if I’m one of the ones AT&T is counting. Do they count only phones pre-ordered on AT&T’s site or all pre-order AT&T phones?
ATT only count ATT orders, everyone else speculates on Apple’s orders. Apples pre order numbers will be bombastic.
the pre-orders would have been higher if AT&T would have adjusted the eligibility for those that upgraded to the Iphone 4 last year, and of course the seeming randomness of the whole eligibility process that no one seems to be able to explain, why some upgrades to iphone 4 are eligible this week and many others are late November..
Aw, gawdammit. I was actually happy that the hype was bad on this model. It’s going to be my first iPhone and I was looking forward to not have to deal with lines or crowds.

Sorry to break it to you. The hype is there for the masses (the folks in your way at the store), it’s only a small minority of vocal geeks and corporate shills that have been making so much noise about how “terrible” this phone is.
The failure was to not call the new iPhone 5.
Nobody s buying a iPhone as a tribute to Steve. This is preposterous!
