“All Things Digital’s John Paczkowski, Apple’s current go-to outlet for backchannel leaks, reports that the new iPhone will be unveiled at a special event on Tuesday Oct. 4,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.
“Paczkowski’s sources say ‘within a few weeks,'” P.E.D. reports. “But in a note to clients Tuesday, Ticonderoga’s Brian White suggests that the lag time between unveiling and release is likely to be considerably shorter than that, especially given how late in the year the iPhone 5 event is occurring.”
P.E.D. reports, “A look at previous lag-times suggests that he is right… The wait between iPhone introduction and sale has steadily decreased from 201 days in 2007 to 17 days in 2010.”

well it’s about time!
Lead time in what country? Apple will be taking orders that day on line and may be shipping in less time than everyone thinks. There could be an inventory of them building already. The older iPhones will be discounted so there is no transition delay. There would have to be something very unique about the new iPhone to delay it and if there was, Apple would not discuss it openly until it was resolved.
They will be taking orders and shipping what is in stock that day. Lead time and lines will be forming. It may take weeks to get yours. But others will be getting their’s shipped that day.
I think Apple will surprise everyone and accept online orders the same day and starts selling the next day 5th. I also believe Apple will release iPhone(s) globally right away (at least to top selling countries say US + 5). This will allow Apple to have a new target for others to try and beat and that is the number of phones sold over the first weekend.
Bullish on Apple…
The long delay in releasing a new iPhone may also be due to Apple’s desire to synchronize the release dates of the AT&T and Verizon iPhones, so there aren’t two launch dates in one year.
The 2007 lag time should be discarded as an outlier, because they *had* to announce it long enough in advance so their FCC filings didn’t give it away. It was also a totally new product, unlike anything else they were then offering, so it had to build up some hype and anticipation.
Since apple is still working out issues with iCloud and iOS5 it is no surprise the iPhone 5 isn’t out yet.
Dont expect the iPhobe 5 to ship until iOS5 and OSX Lion are ready to support iCloud as planned.
Dell’s response will be a firesale on all products for as long as stocks last.
