“HTC, Asia’s No. 2 smartphone maker, is confident of defeating Apple in an ongoing patent fight, a senior HTC executive said,” Kim Yoo-chul reports for The Korea Times. “‘We have no question that HTC will definitely win,’ said Jack Tong, president of HTC North Asia in a press conference with South Korean reporters at an event to unveil its advanced LTE-based smartphone at a Seoul hotel, Wednesday. ‘HTC is waiting for a final ruling from the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) and the ruling will be on our side,’ the senior company executive said.”
“The USITC is currently reviewing HTC’s claim over patent infringement by Apple,” Kim reports. “‘HTC will be more active in defending our intellectual properties,’ according to the executive.”
“HTC admits that it plans to develop its own mobile operating system (OS), joining an industry-wide trend,” Kim reports. “HTC, however, [is] on a slippery slope in terms of its development phase in its own OS as it would lack available applications. If the HTC OS turns out to be a complete failure, analysts think it could be catastrophic for the firm… An uncompetitive and content-lacking OS would set HTC back and undoubtedly drag down its brand loyalty.”

If HTC is so confident, why develop its own OS? Sounds like Plan B to me.
Winning! In the sheen sense…
laughable…
Brand loyalty? They must be joking.
All I can think of when i read this is “All your base belong us!”
Too close to grammatically correct, the original is:
All your base are belong to us!
It is laughable but who knows what courts are like in Asia.
Probably the best justice one can buy
Their confident about the court case here in the US… that’s the one he’s bragging about winning…
Why do they say this stuff. Gah.
I know – every time some random exec says something like this, they always lose. I guess the ones that know they’ll actually win, just keep their mouths shut and win.
This kind of bravado seems to be a cultural thing. Several years ago Samsung claimed that they were going to have %80 of the mirrorless camera market, when they had no mirror less camera yet, and Panasonic/Olympus had %100 market share. They haven’t even come close and are in third place in market share, it seems to me.
Then again, there is Palms’ “everyone one will be off their 2 year iPhone contract and switch to a Palm Pre in 2 months” claim….
MDN should start an iCal wager site.
People love their iPhones….. not that I think there is a possibility, but if they were to prevent Apple from selling the iPhone I wonder what the repercusions would be from the iPhone love/wanting public. If they think the iPhone buyers would stream to them….. well…..
Take my iPhone away I’ll be danged if I would buy an HTC….
I think iPhone users would stream to them…with pitchforks and torches.
Such hubris…
We saw where that got Palm, RIMM, M$oft, Samsung, HP, et al.
Going to get the popcorn…
Sounds like this is an issue about loss of face. Not a good thing thing in the East. We’ve seen this bravado before; it doesn’t end well.
Apple is doomed again and again.
Well how about that. I didn’t realize HTC had any brand loyalty!
yep…if you are loyal to phones that suck down the battery with minimum use or overheat and reboot continuously…love my DROID INC..not!
*cough* bullshit *cough*
=:~)
Idiots. Do they think that some guy will impress a girl in a bar with “My smart phone has great patents.” Or do people buy cars or HDTV sets because they have great patents.
It is more than the iPhone or iPad features that people are buying. Clueless idiots, people don’t want your me-too crap smart phones! If the device isn’t part of the Apple ecosystem, people don’t want it.
“HTC will be more active in defending our intellectual properties”
Exactly what intellectual properties are they even referring to?
Please.
US cemeteries are filled with patriotic Americans who died in 1952 to make sure leading S Korea firms like HTC and Samsung could have their day in court against Apple and Apple’s investors.
They also made possible the film and long running TV series M.A.S.H.
Actually, HTC is a Taiwanese company.
Also, how is getting involved in a war in another country patriotic for the USA?
I know people like to spread these kinds of lies because it is easier to say “those men have to die to protect OAR FREEEDOOOM!” than “We’re going to kill off your sons because we’ve gotten into a pissing match with other world leaders, and our buddies will make billions in the process…. too bad for you, hahahaha!”
These illegal wars are the reason the founding fathers wanted no standing army… and so the people who participate in them are not really being patriotic… they are helping the country move to a kleptocracy.
The Korean War was a United Nations conflict. The U.S. was only one of the countries that came to South Korea’s aid.
Yup, just like Bill Gates and Microsoft felt that they could win on the ‘comes in lots of colors’ front.
HTC sues and hopes to win because they realize that there is no way in heaven, earth, or hell that they will win by producing a decent product.
The response to this guy’s hubris used to be “I’ll have what he’s drinking” (or smoking). But what first comes to my mind these days is “You’re actually paying lawyers for this?”
Mr. Sim of Creative was equally confident he would defeat the iPod several years ago.
Sure those who say they are disappointed at Apple for “suing everybody” or for “patenting everything” they will never buy from Apple again, wont be disappointed at HTC or Samsung. They are not disappointed at Apple because they never believed in Apple in the first place.
However the world needs to define new rules for global and local players. Every ruling these days will have a great impact on how companies, entire countries or regions will align.
Imagine how a very fragmented global market and complicated legal rules will affect a product launch for companies like Apple or Samsung. I don’t know either how courts in Asia work but for a global market to function, wont it need certain coherency?
Did he use the word “innovate”? If he did that would be the icing on the cake for his stupidity.
HTC: We own the patents on how to rip other people’s IP off.
Uuuuh, Im scared now!
Not!
I remember when HTC’s smartphones were coming out with Windows Mobile software at the time of the original iPhone in 2007. I tried them out and they were absolutely horrible in comparison to the iPhone. At that time, the HTC CEO was very arrogant, claiming how “innovative” HTC was with their Windows Mobile phones, and that their features rivaled the iPhone. Lucky for them, Eric de mole Schmidt’s Google thieves stole from Oracle and Sun’s Java, stole from Apple’s board meetings, and mimeographed “Android”. So now HTC can create copycat iPhones with little of their own R&D, while their arrogant executives can trumpet their so-called “‘intellectual property.”
Addendum: In 2007, they were using their “Touch glide” overlay glued or taped onto the Windows Mobile OS, in a sad attempt to mimic the iPhone’s elegant touch interface. It was remarkably inferior to the iPhone interface. So much for their intellectual property.
The only thing of Apple’s that HTC is gonna beat is the HAMMER lol
“HTC is waiting for a final ruling from the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) and the ruling will be on our side.”
Well, now that HTC as told the U.S. International Trade Commission how they should rule, why bother waiting for the decision?
So HTC is admitting they are planing on orphaning their current phones? Where do I sign up?
