“It looks like the reports of Apple shipping its Thunderbolt Display ($999 direct) are true after all,” Laarni Almendrala Ragaza reports for PC Magazine. “After announcing it in July, the Cupertino-based company is now shipping pre-ordered units to consumers. We got our hands on one of the first.”
“The Thunderbolt Display’s edge-to-edge glass screen has a 2,560-by-1,440 resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. It utilizes IPS (in-plane switching) technology for viewing images,” Ragaza reports. “The display also comes with several connectivity features, including three USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 800 port, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and, of course, Thunderbolt, for daisy chaining other Thunderbolt-equipped devices. There is a built-in FaceTime HD video camera, as well as a 2.1 speaker system.”
Ragaza reports, “The monitor’s Thunderbolt I/O technology features two bi-directional channels with claimed transfer speeds up to 10Gbps each. That means that each Thunderbolt port delivers PCI Express directly to external peripherals, such as high-performance storage and RAID arrays. It also supports DisplayPort for high-resolution displays and works with existing adapters for HDMI, DVI, and VGA displays.”

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader “Fred Mertz” for the heads up.]
thanks for all of the great info on all of the specs that we’ve reading about for the last 4 weeks!!!!!!! Great reporting!!!!!
No kidding! That was some “Hands On” reporting. I love their in depth investigation and well considered impressions of the new display.
No matte option = no purchase. Ever.
I understand the POV. But for imaging pros, it is exactly the opposite. I’d never work with a matt screen.
There are matte covers available for various screen sizes.
Mark, if you want matte screens, have you taken time to add your petition at http://macmatte.wordpress.com ? There are close to 1,800 petitions there. In the wider community, usually around 1% of people, who are pissed with an issue, take time to write to politicians etc. and the Mac community is made up of the wider community, with the same approach to proactive steps.
Once you go matte, you can’t go back.
Sure yer’ can … you just buff it out.
Now if you want a matte screen.
I suggest a Chromium oxide Microgrit P1200 (ISO/FEPA) sandpaper.
Start at the top …
Yeah, you ARE ‘Jus Josh’n’. Good gawd.
I’m sure it’s a wonderful monitor but I wouldn’t pay $999 for it (or any other)
Sure am glad to know that. Now I can get on with the rest of my day.
Well Bongo, it appears that you march to a different drummer.
I’ll take two please!
