Bloomberg: Apple preps faster A5-powered iPhone for September; iPad with Retina display

“Apple Inc. plans to introduce a new iPhone in September that boasts a stronger chip for processing data and a more advanced camera, according to two people familiar with the plans,” Tim Culpan, Peter Burrows and Adam Satariano report for Bloomberg. “The screen resolution on Apple’s new iPad would be about one-third higher than that of the iPad 2 and will boast a more responsive touchscreen, one of the people said… The new iPhone will closely resemble the iPhone 4, the people said.”

“The device will include the A5 processor, the more powerful chip that Apple added to the iPad 2 earlier this year, along with an 8-megapixel camera, up from the 5-megapixel model in the iPhone 4, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the details aren’t public,” Culpan, Burrows and Satariano report. “Apple is also testing a new version of the iPad that has a higher resolution screen, similar to the one now used in the iPhone 4, one of the people said.”

Culpan, Burrows and Satariano report, “Apple pushed back the release of the next iPhone — its fifth — to coincide with the release of the new iOS 5, the people said… Apple is also working to finish a cheaper version of the iPhone aimed at attracting customers in developing countries, the people said. This device would use chips and displays of similar quality to today’s iPhone 4, the people said.”

  1. Why you allow dribble from these apple bashers. The whole point of their hit piece is to thwart BGRs positive effect on the stock. Their piece basically says no real difference in the phone and much later than expected. Also, iPad 3 around the corner why buy now.

On feb. 22, these same fool published a hit piece claiming iPad 2 will be released in June. Effect on the stock price on that day, $12 to the downside. Here is a blurb from that day.

According to Bloomberg, Yuanta Securities analysts Vincent Chen and Alison Chen claim that Apple’s contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry is experiencing “production bottlenecks” forcing Apple to push the iPad 2 release from April to some time in June.

  2. @Frederico.
You have a valid point there. Articles like these are devised to spread rumors around without any tangible proof.

Saying that, this is a Apple rumors site, so I hope we all take everything we ready that is not officially from Apple with a large pinch of salt.

I cannot see why Apple would even consider releasing an iPad3 six months after releasing the iPad2.
    1. They have just ramped up iPad2 production. They need to be at full speed for the Xmas quarter.
    2. The cost of developing the iPad2 need to be recouped. Therefore it is unlikely that they will switch to a new model 6 months after release.
    3. iPad2 has enough new features to provide excellent sales during the rest of this year. Adding an updated version makes no sense given the difficulties in providing supply.

The key thing here is that Apple want to have a plentiful supply for the Xmas season. They could easily ship 30M units in that quarter. So why would they risk having production issues in the busiest retail time of the year.

As for iP5, I hope it arrives in Sept. I would really like to upgrade from my 3GS.

      1. I meant this argument:

**The key thing here is that Apple want to have a plentiful supply for the Xmas season. They could easily ship 30M units in that quarter. So why would they risk having production issues in the busiest retail time of the year.**

  3. Another load of nonsense about 1/3 bigger resolution for next iPad (it will be 4 * iPad 1-2 resolution) and about “more responsive” touch screen (there is no way to make it even more responsive than it is now; let alone the fact it makes no sense).

  4. I think Apple should not go for the cheaper version. In stead Apple can release earlier version with a cheaper price for the developing country. For example, iPhone4 can be released for the developing country when iphone5 will be released for the developed countries.

    1. Agreed. Make last year’s model less expensive for developing nations. No need to create a separate model line. Apple needs to stay away from throwaway devices since that’s Android territory.

These damn analysts couldn’t analyze their way out of a brown paper bag. Whatever they say, Apple should do exactly the opposite and probably will.

  5. It would be very unlike Apple to wait over a year and just do a minor update. This update most likely will be big. I think they want to get a new design to remove the negative stigma that has followed the iPhone 4 with the antenna issue (legitimate issue or not). I expect the BGR article to be pretty right on. 4″ display and all.

    1. You are absolutely right, but guess what, all the news is about Bloomberg confirming an apple release different from BGR. Again on Feb. 22, Bloomberg carried the story that ipad 2 is definitely delayed to June. Three weeks later, ipad 2 was released.

    2. There is no negative stigma: iPhone 4 design is many times more popular than previous, original iPhone design.

iPhone 4 is actually the biggest selling phone model in the world (it is not Nokia’s since they have like thirty models selling simultaneously).

Also, according to AnandTech tests, new unique antenna construction allowed the phone keep ***times*** lower signals comparing to classic antenna design phones. (And the matter of shortening Wi-Fi and cellular antenna on the phone was blown up by the media — when Apple gave out “bumpers” for free, almost no one wanted them.)

  6. Bloomberg providing cover for the MMs to take down apple today. They release this 12 hours after BGR reports that apple will release the iphone 5 in august and it will be a new design.

Why do they not name their sources? Is it because they are the same as these two:

Apple Inc.’s shipments of a new version of its iPad tablet computer may be delayed to June from April because of “production bottlenecks” at manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Yuanta Securities Co. said.

The delay arose after Cupertino, California-based Apple made design changes before the Lunar New Year, according to a report by Vincent Chen and Alison Chen, analysts at Yuanta. Jill Tan, an Apple spokeswoman in Hong Kong, declined to comment on the report. Edmund Ding, a spokesman for Hon Hai, didn’t answer calls to his Taiwan and China mobile phones.

  7. I’ve often argued that when people publish predictions from analysts, they should in the same article publish a selection of predictions that the analyst made in recent years. That way we can see who has any track record and who is clueless.

  8. > The screen resolution on Apple’s new iPad would be about one-third higher than that of the iPad 2

The only way there would be an iPad with screen resolution “about one-third higher” is if Apple released a NEW iPad screen size, maybe 1600×1200 at 12 inches diagonal, while keeping the current iPad 2 (1024×768).

Any rumors about replacing the current iPad 2 with an new model, while Apple still cannot keep them in stock, is absolutely ridiculous. It’s just the competition trying to delay purchases by making potential customers believe there’s something new “just around the corner.”

    1. WS SHYSTERS obliged by their media whores. WS hates Jobs. They see a zero sum game emerging and are doing everything they can to stymie apple. If they cannot, they can at least inflict some pain on the shareholders and employees who have no option but to sell due to needs (retirement, expenses, planned exercise of options). While in the case of Bezosand company, WS obliges and pushes PE ratios to 80x on a declining profit outlook.
