Gaming industry plans to exploit iPad 2 speed boosts

“The mobile gaming industry is already in the process of adapting graphics to the iPad 2, even though the tablet will only ship on March 11th, developers reveal,” MacNN reports.

“The chief creative officer of Unity, Nicholas Francis, notes that while his company’s engine already supports multi-core processors like the Apple A5, the firm is planning to ‘really fine tune and really optimize it to run fantastic on the iPad,'” MacNN reports. “Developers building games on Unity should be able to add effects to iOS that were previously limited to PC and console titles.”

MacNN reports, “Epic Games — the developer of Infinity Blade and the Unreal Engine, aside from many PC and console titles — claims that Unreal Engine 3 is already able to take advantage of the iPad 2… Real Racing 2 HD will therefore be “much more graphically intensive,” also capitalizing on the iPad 2’s gyroscope to improve steering. Space Minter developer Venan Arcade comments that in an upcoming sequel, some iPad 2-exclusive graphical filters will be present.”

    1. I’m with you Zune. I’m willing to wait 2 more years for Windows tablets. I’m used to waiting. I waited 39 years to move out of my parent’s house and into their garage. I waited until the internet exploded to find go on my first date. I’m patient.

      1. Playing games on ANY tablet is a joke. Any person who enjoys it isn’t a true gamer, and only plays casual games that don’t require much thought.

I’ve seen videos of those stupid racing games. Yeah the rights look ok, but the whole idea of turning the whole screen doesn’t work right, there is WAY too much of a delay once the screen is turned. Its the delay that makes it a joke. Along with the lack of a real keyboard.

        1. Take a shit, shower, shave, put on clean clothes and
go outside to meet life. You’re taking gaming way too
serious. Is it time for an intervention? I’m not a “true
gamer”, but I have fun playing my games on iPad.
Isn’t having fun what’s it all about? 🙂

        2. Tim really REALLY likes his PC.. (lol)

Keep in mind, Timmy, that iPad 2 hasn’t even come out yet (along with the games that will be coming out for it to take advantage of the new CPU and graphics), so you can’t really make accurate assumptions on something you never even tried. (I understand that you really really like yer PC.. it’s okay we’re not taking it from you I sure as hell don’t want it, lol!)

        3. When you’re on a plane, in a waiting room, etc.. the iPad is awesome for games. I play NHL2K11 all the time on my iPad. Of course I prefer my XBOX for gaming, but iPad games can be very good too.

      1. Exactly. They will potentially have higher frame rates.

Just like the diehard PC gaming computers, “I can get 86 frames per second on this baby!”

Like the human eye can even tell after a certain point.

I imagine more objects moving at the same time, better light rendering, etc.

      1. PC’s have much more advanced graphics. There is no way you will get anywhere near a modern day PC graphics card. The cards themselves are almost a foot long and a couple inches wide. Its impossible on any slim Apple computer.

        1. Have stopped for a second to consider that this is a tablet we are speaking of? And that PC games’ graphics evolution was slowed by the current crop of consoles? Yes, we ALL know how that $500 Radeon 6990 is awesome and all, but having PS3-like graphics on a ten inch slab that is thinner than an iPhone and weighs 600g… that’s just awesome.

No, of course this is not a “real gamers’ device”, but it can support much more “serious” games with those kind of graphics, and, of course, if the devs start actually paying attention to their software so they can improve the on-screen controls.

    1. Surely you mean “any advantage to using a NGP for gaming”?

As much as I love Apple for making the iPad 2 potentially as powerful as a PS3, it still doesn’t have any shoulder buttons that are essential for AAA games.

Sure, if devs took their time to create a truly good interface (starting by replacing those ridiculous semi-transparent analog sticks with a 50-50 invisible split between screen halves) this wouldn’t be a problem…

  1. It should be interesting, with HDMI output and 9 times the graphics power of the original iPad, to see if this iPad 2 puts a dent into gaming console purchases. This all-purposes iPad 2 might end up being the only gadget you really need for interactive and multimedia entertainment.

    1. yes, especially if they can incorporate a 16:9 mode where you cam pan left/right on the iPad to see it all, but view the full frame at once on the HDMI connected HDTV screen. many iPad games already allow you to pan through a scene.

  2. @Tim

You are wrong on the graphics part. Go google some cards for a mac. You will find that they can run over $1000 just like your precious PC cards… and even better… a lot of them can be flashed to work on the Mac or vice versa. For now there obviously isn’t many Mac users playing games compared to the PC world but it has slowly been getting bigger as more games are being made now for the Mac which is pretty much stemmed from the release of intel chips in their computers. Its a slow progression but getting there. I think the majority though is moving away from systems and going to consoles. Why pay a grand or more for some elite power house computer to play your games at the highest spec when you the real gamers just buy a PS3 or xbox 360.

Also, I understand your arguement about playing games on ANY tablet is a joke. I have played some myself but on my iphone 4 not an ipad since I don’t own one. Things aren’t AS responsive and its a bit different but I think in my opinion many will flock to the portable devices for gaming even the true gamers. All gamers have to leave their dark cold basement at their parents house some time. And when they do, they can continue to elevate their inner geek by playing on their portable device.

What I would love, and thought of when the first apple TV came out is using an iphone, ipod touch or ipad as a gaming controller. It would kinda be like a wii where you turn your device and it picks up your movements which would be ideal for car games that may need more power than your device can provide. They could sell the Apple TV with the same processor as the new iPad with an ipod touch that is literally just a smaller GB version of the regular touches, or maybe some package of a regular touch and Apple TV. You must admit yourself, how cool would it be to hop in your living room and play a game using your touch device as a controller. Yes I know its not xbox 360 or PS3 but it would be rather neat. And best of all….. its affordable… Even if you got a package of the Apple TV with ipod touch for $300, you’d alone save on the games being at most $10. And the wii pretty much proved that its not all about graphics its about the game play. I can play regular mario from nintendo for hours on end with crappy graphics but its somehow addicting.. kinda like angry birds
