South Korea’s largest carrier, SK Telecom, to offer Apple iPhone starting in March

Ju-min Park reports for Reuters, “SK Telecom, South Korea’s top mobile carrier, has decided to offer Apple Inc.’s iPhone, previously carried exclusively by smaller rival KT Corp, the company said on Friday.”

The Korea Herald reports, “South Korea’s top mobile carrier SK Telecom Co. will release Apple Inc.’s iPhone 4 in the local market next month, ending the exclusive distribution by its rival wireless operator, an industry source said Thursday.”

“KT Corp., the country’s No. 2 mobile carrier, introduced the iPhone in the domestic market in November 2009 and has since sold more than 2 million units,” The Korea Herald reports.

  1. I don’t think people realize how big a hit the iPhone has been in S Korea, one of the most difficult markets in the world to crack. 2M+ iPhones in 15 months is a big deal. There were only about 400k smartphones in all of S Korea when the iPhone launched.

    1. He is right. Koreans have been getting Iphones like crazy especially the iPhone 4. Both young and old are getting them. Just going around in public or on the train you can seen tons of iPhones.

  2. Adding one more perspective! KT earned about 3times more data traffic earnings from iPhone sold.. which means it had proved KT what they hoped from smartphone business. SKT on the other hand defended its market share with Galaxy S without getting the returns from Adroid phones. Interesting to see two major telcos offering iphones after Mar.. and following months.
