“Apple won’t be attending this year’s Macworld event in San Francisco for the second year running,” Derek du Preez reports for Computing. “But the event is still expected to be a success, with the organisers claiming that there will be a 30 to 35 per cent increase in exhibitors compared with 2010.”

What benefit is there for attending that show? I couldn’t justify the expense in my wildest dreams.
Don’t knock it if you’ve never been. I’ve been 4x.
Classes and lectures are fantastic you learn a lot. The exhibit floor is amazing and educating.
I’ve bought stuff from the exhibit floor it that I wouldn’t have bought just looking at a website or reading a review. Putting your hands on things and getting personal demos is worth a lot. So is talking to the actual developers in person. Add in the freebies, and deals—you can’t beat it, even without Apple there.

If you live in or near San Francisco, the Expo is “free.” Totally worthwhile (since the “expense” is parking or BART/Muni fare). They smartly start the “Expo” portion later in the week (Thursday) and run it until Saturday, so people don’t have to take a day off to attend.
I went last year and it was fun. The absence of Apple gave the other exhibitors more attention. There was a lot of energy. I didn’t realize vendor participation had actually increased this year.
I’ll probably go Friday afternoon.
