“The iPad will be getting a 2048×1536 display, but only in a third-generation model, says IDC research manager Tom Mainelli,” Electronista reports. “‘Our sources say Apple has requested that manufacturers begin work on displays with that resolution for the iPad 3,’ he writes”
Electronista reports, “The issue is said to be production capacity, rather than the technology’s existence or expense. ‘I don’t believe anybody is ready to produce that resolution in volumes at this point,’ Mainelli comments.”

Balderdash, they just need to produce one.
For me!.
Fiddlesticks. Me too
TOO EXPENSIVE..
no surprise there
There is a very interesting “feedback” response to this article at Macworld.co.uk under “iPad 2 won’t have 2,048×1,536 resolution.”
Me 2
2,048×1,536 seemed like a bit of a stretch when I first heard the rumor. Still, Apple investments of billions of dollars can make amazing things happen. Apple’s commitment to higher display resolutions is clear with the iPhone 4. Sooner or later the iPad display resolution will ramp up to the range of 200-300 ppi.
Makes sense..
Also somewhat relieved as A high resolution display would be reason enough for me to upgrade.. A slimmer enclosure and camera are nice and all but really not enough to warrant an upgrade.. Especialy since my iPhone, MBP, and Cinema display all have cameras which I rarely use..
I know Facetime is supposed to be a killer feature, and it is nice, but i’ve only actually used it ONCE since I got my iPhone 4 in June.
Eh no shit Sherlock. This whole retina display rumor was dumb from the get go.
Seems to me that the major upgrades come every other year with an incremental one in between. A retinal display in the 2nd gen. model would be too soon. I think any upgrade will involve the processor, amount of RAM and a camera.
…gee, if only someone could make a ~$3.9B investment in supply chains…

+1 for Sarasota. Of course, that would mean that the Marketing department is the driving force behind iPad releases, wouldn’t it?
A rumor about another rumor. No other company can inspire such a vaporous debate over expectations.
@Sarasota,
And that is the reason why I wait for the third revision of any Apple product.
iPad is already going to have TWO cameras, a faster “A5” (or “A8”) processor, double the system RAM, gyroscope (like iPhone 4), etc., according to other rumors. And it’s supposed to be thinner and lighter (and maybe smaller around the outer edge). I’d say that’s enough for iPad 2, while still keeping a consistent platform that starts at $499 retail.
Disappointing… if true.
