“With a bit of aftermarket TLC, the mostly-for-hipsters Apple iPad 16GB ($499) really can be tricked into becoming a legit portable workstation,” Jonathan Blum reports for MarketWatch.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. Get yourself an aftermarket, hard-qwerty keyboard: For my money, the real winner is Salt Lake City-based Zagg’s all-aluminum ZAGGmate ($99). This iPad cover features a well-designed keyboard, rugged aluminum shell and surprisingly high-quality look and feel. When using it you will need to remind yourself you’re not working on a legit MacBook.
2. Don’t be afraid to invest in software at the App Store: You will be surprised — and honestly, overwhelmed — by the number and quality of business apps.
3. Remember that you are [mostly] accessing data with your iPad, not creating it: Enter much of your business content as possible elsewhere and use the iPad for virtual access to that content.

MDN… Why are you always the slowest to report??
The writer is an idiot, using phrases like “mostly-for-hipsters,” “not working on a legit MacBook.,” ” You will be surprised — and honestly, overwhelmed — by the number and quality of business apps,” “accessing data with your iPad, not creating it.” Blum had to write a good piece but hates Apple.
The only thing I got from this is that the zagg keyboard case is nice and that the writer is a moron.
Yes, only hipsters buy iPads, no one knows about the app store, and the iPad is for consumption, not creation. WTF does “virtual access” mean relative to other access done on a computer?
Apparently, ‘hipster’ is a derogatory term used by those who hate Apple and it’s products to refer to people who use Apple’s products. It is amusing, however, to watch all the haters forced to admit that the products they hate so much are actually worth buying.
You start off by spending $99 for keyboard, then you go to the App store and spend some more on business apps ………
You can do anything with money!
Crap article.
As long as he got in a slam at iPad buyers, all is right with the world. Remember, you arent allowed to say anything nice about an apple product unless you slam its users as stupid and shallow first.

“you can buy anything with money”
It shows just how far people don’t want to understand the iPad, or can’t think beyond their box.
You don’t need a external keyboard, use a typing class app. I like Tap Type, but that’s me.
Content creation. This Saturday I was at a memorial, I took photos and video with my iPhone. This included a fly over from a family friend. Afterword we went to a restaurant. Within an hour I had the content on my iPad and showing it to the guest. If I would have remembered to bring my SD connecter I would have had other people’s photos and videos. I handed to a person who never used one and gave minimal instructions and they loved seeing it. It was past around the table and I did not have to tell anyone how ealse to use it. The pilot love seeing what he had just done from the ground prospective. Later I edited the video and created 2 short videos with out the boring parts, so people would enjoy it more. I did not plan this, it was all on the fly. You could not do this with a netbook, or notebook; no one would have passed it around and showed someone else how to use a device they have not used before. For me this was quick and dirty, and they were amazed.
People just can’t wrap their head around that a Apple product is not a toy. Easy to use is a big business advantage. Well at the end of this year when the Apple haters are discovering why tablets are better than netbooks, we can I told you so.
Yes, I use Logmein to access my iMac at home – and my Macbook Pro, if I leave it home and just carry my iPad. It works great, and for me the free version is fine.
Now I’m waiting for the company I work for to get their Citrix farm up to date so I can use Citrix Receiver (right now it we can only get on using a Java client, which excludes the iPad).
Thank you for the info regarding LogMeIn!
Yeah, “hipsters” like the 100-year-old woman, the boy with muscular dystrophy, Fox news anchors, U.S. Congress, the author’s personal physician, etc. etc.
While it’s obvious the author is a jacka$$. The point he was making is quite valid. The iPad can be used as an interface for business relatively cheaply. Remote access ability makes you wonder why you would want to carry a laptop that need to be charged every 40 minutes.
