“The iPad is changing how folks read stuff online — no surprise if you think how different a gizmo it is to a PC,” Kit Eaton reports for Fast Company. “But a new study shows it’s moving online reading into primetime TV hours, which is big news. Is evening reading coming back, just in a digital style?”
“With minor usage spikes first thing in the morning, at lunchtime and then dinner time, the main bulk of iPad text content consumption is from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.,” Eaton reports. “This is prime-time TV’s slot, and it seems that as well as settling back on the sofa to watch TV, people are taking their iPad with them too.”
MacDailyNews Take: Exactly what we do.
Eaton reports, “The data doesn’t reveal if folk are multitasking (spending some time ogling their favorite shows, some looking data up on the Web) or are ignoring the TV altogether–but the data will still be of concern to TV execs who expect uninterrupted attention from TV watchers, in order to maximize ad revenues.”

This is why Steve Jobs told everyone that the iPad is the most important thing he’s ever done.
Put something on worth watching!
All Network TV sucks Big Time!
Cabled TV is getting worst all the time!
Here’s what my wife does with her iPad while wtaching TV during this time slot. When the commercials come on, the iPad comes out. Good luck mainstream TV. Your days are numbered.
I gave up on 90 % of primetime TV years ago.
Leave it to Jobs to reinvent and rekindle reading…
@ Cl4: Amen to that. Haven’t seen much tv in ages.
@ breeze: Amazon kindled reading, and Jobs rekindles it!
@ breeze. Rekindle? (smirk)
Payback is a bitch….
Why I have a DVR
If they want us to pay attention:
1. Improve quality of programming
2. Cut down the commercials
3. Don’t run the same coms back to back
4. Don’t overlay ads on top of shows
5. Get rid of the f’n “bugs”
On the other hand current TV might be the greatest force for literacy since Guttenberg.
Stopped watching liberal bull on tv years ago. We really don’t need tv to brainwash our kids to learn Marxist ideology. Hurray for reading!
Could the iPad could be the saviour of America, lifting the population out of ignorance? Sadly, I imagine that many Americans will continue to watch Fox non-news while chatting on Facebook, watching inane YouTube videos or twittering inanities to each other.
@ MacDoc, amen!
The only reason my household watches TV is that we can buy what we want on iTunes.
iPad may just save reading, and transform web browsing from “something I do at the office when the boss isn’t watching” into a legitimate home activity. It may even make paid content finally viable.
Prime time here in the CST is 7p-10p. I put the kid to bed at 9pm and then the wife and I go to bed to watch TV, read, or *wink*.
Aside from the NFL there is no show I watch at it’s appointed hour. I don’t have much use for the TV network’s scheduling of my time.
@ Rhoy,
“We really don’t need TV to brainwash our kids to learn Marxist Ideology.”
No we don’t. That’s what our unionized teachers are for.
Exactly the reasons I have a dvr…
I do watch sone shows still, but hardly ever “live”
Netflix has me watching old shows I either didn’t care to watch at the time or just didn’t know about.
ATM watching stargate sg-1.
I always have my mbp and iPhone with me when I do watch something. And that will switch to iPad, and prob watching even more netflix from bed.
I had thought of buying an Internet tv or bluray player for my bedroom (only tv’s in my house are in front room and my office)
Then I figured I’d just get an iPad… Solves all the problems
@ Swing Geezer
It’s too late. The paradigm has been broken, and people are starting to get the TV they want when they wan it. Commercial television is already doomed.
I cancelled TV a week after I bought my iPad, and now watch mostly Netflix. Give me a commercial-free Hulu option, and a few shows worth watching, and I’ll do that too. I’ll never go back to broadcast/cable.
I just watch my favorite shows from a year or two ago on the iPad during that time. The TV stays off, or even, in the other room…
Maybe if threre weren’t months long breaks in tv seasons, interrupt with shitty commercials every 6 minutes, and stop canceling good shows all the time I’d be sympathetic.
@MacDoc
You are so right. The quality of the programming is getting worse and worse. My wife and I cut cable and are down to 1 TV in the house and are better for it. The couple of shows we like we can get over the air or from iTunes. I anticipate that in the next 12 to 24 months Apple is going to make some moves to really shake things up in the TV industry. I think Steve Jobs last great act (before he retires) will be to free us from the burden of the current cable and network TV system. He did it with music, did it with phones, and will do it again with television.
This is just from the people who are using the web on their iPads. Just think of the people are reading books, playing Angry Birds, or enjoying some of the other thousands of apps that don’t require you to be on the net.
Some of the replays on CNN are great. Does Apple own CNN, why do they only talking about the iPad? No, SJ owns ABC (Disney), so there would be a completive advantage not to say a lot about them. The article was about internet use, e readers don’t spend a lot of thime on the web. If there were a lot of other tablet devices they would mention them. I know about MS and the Galaixy Tab, but together they don’t have a noticable part of the market. If they did CNN would be all over it.
Apple did something that no one expected, they competed on price. A lot of people just can’t seem to rap their head around it. They undercut the price of Windows tablets by hundreds of dollars, and had more apps for it. (by that I mean apps that were just for the tablet part of Win.) The Android tablets, all what 2 of them, are about the same price for half the size. This is hard for a lot of Mac haters to comprehend.
and what is the prime time for reading paper books??
I think there is NO relation between TV and the choice of a book’s hardware.
TV is TV, reading is reading.
@Rhoy: Wow, I didn’t know you could become dumber by reading. There is no marxist conspiracy anywhere in the world, most stuff on TV is completely apolitical, and the 10 hours a week the liberal Olberman and Maddow get is more than balanced by 168 hours Fox News has on the air.
@Rhoy
Just when I was thinking how Apple focused MDN had become since the Giffords shooting. Just when I began to believe that the vicious rhetoric from the two sides of Anerican extremism had gone, you FUCK IT UP.
Um, I ‘ve used a laptop while watching TV since before Airport debuted. First it was modem cables and then it CAT cable strung across the room. Most people I know use either their computer or their iPhone/iPad while the TV is on. Its a great way to fact check, look up actors to see if they’re still alive, and keep up on email and the web. It has to be pretty important for me to not use my laptop while watching TV.
I read my iPad while watching TV.
@ Rhoy … Yes Hurray for reading!
But you can’t limit your reading to “Mein Kampf.”
F*ck TV. I canceled my cable TV 8 months ago and have never looked back.
Mien Kamph! Hitler was not a Marxist, you chump- he was a Fascist. BIG difference. Stop trying to think, it could be fatal.
I use mine while watching TV (actually an iMac with content from iTunes rental or ——) to find the locations where the scene I’m watching is actually filmed. Once you work out the city the rest is easy… and fun.
Worst thng to happen to TV programming. Reality TV.
See the movie “Idiocracy” for where America is going!
@breeze: Rekindle? There’s hope for you yet, it appears!
99.99% of what is on TV are trash. I have not watched TV for the past 30 years and I do not feel that I have missed anything. Actually watching TV stupefies one’s mind because one does not need to imagine anymore. Everything is been done by someone else and you just have to switch off your mind and be comatose.
In contrast, reading requires that you exercise your thinking power and imagination or else you would not benefit at all. It requires effort and discipline.
With the gluttony for TV programs among Americans, it’s no wonder that America is falling behind in many areas that matters.
@Gadfly
“Mien Kamph! Hitler was not a Marxist, you chump- he was a Fascist. BIG difference. Stop trying to think, it could be fatal.”
Um, you do realize that Skylark was not making a mistake about the whole ‘Mein Kampf’ thing, don’t you? That what he was doing was calling Rhoy a fascist for his knee-jerk, right-wing post?
So, as the saying goes, if the “Stop trying to think, it could be fatal” shoe fits…
I don’t watch much Tv any more. If I watch movies I do it on my computer.
