“If you want yet more evidence that Apple Inc. has been on a roll lately, look to its patents,” Jennifer Valentino-DeVries reports for The Wall Street Journal.
“The tech giant won 563 patents in 2010, compared 289 in 2009 and 186 in 2008, according to IFI Claims Patent Services,” Valentino-DeVries reports. “That was enough to put it in the top 50 companies world-wide.”
Valentino-DeVries reports, “Despite a burst in gadget development that started with its iPod, Apple didn’t crack the list of top 50 companies for patents until 2010, because of the time it takes to get a patent approved. Many of the patents Apple won last year had application dates of 2004 or 2005.”

we are only seeing the beginning
When can we start enforcing them?
They don’t need a patent on their process of bitchslapping the Ballmers and Jokias of the world.
What good are patents when HTC, Motorola, Samsung, etc. can copy your hardware look and Google can rip-off your OS and they can, by some measures, outsell you (granted, through never-ending Buy One Get One Free promotions) without retribution?
MDN MW: “heavy” – I’m not “heavy,” I’m your brother.
Some of the patents finally granted in 2010 were those multi-touch patents applied for years ago. Having the granted patent in hand will certainly help infringement suits. I don’t know the exact timing of the suit against HTC and these patents, but maybe Apple waited for the patent granting before filing suit. Now we are just waiting for the suit to grind through the court system. Time is on Apple’s side along as they win the suit because damages keep growing as long as Android powered phones are being sold.

No puck metaphors please!
Shows pure and raw innovation and dividend money targeted toward R&D…M$ and RIMM wish they had done that.
They’re on a roll all right… a sweet one.
Apple didn’t “win” any patents. They earned them by inventing!
Patents filed in 2004 & 2005 were just granted in 2010….
Six years to grant a highly technical patent, when, in six years computer devices are almost antiques.
Gotta love a government agency. Don’t dare ask them to hurry.
Oh, just to keep the political theme going on this thread too…
You want the same government in charge of health care?
“Submit your paperwork here for heart surgery.”
Five years later… “We’re ready.”
@Think
UR right.
5-6 years may be long, but Apple can ask for royalties or for a judgement against a competitor to stop using the patented technology.
Apple has a huge patent department & they are diligent.
IBM lead for 18 years in a row and cracked the 5000
barrier for the year? I wonder which stock I should buy
and hold long term. Go big Blue.
@X
LOL. That was frackin’ awesome.
Totally right! Just imagine if the same government running the Patent office and is trying to get a hold of our health care ran the Post Office…. It’d take years just to get or receive a letter. Or the fire dept!? The entire city would burn while they processed the forms needed to send a fire truck or not, or the police dept? Calling 911 would get you a committee who would debate and argue about whether or not! Thank Baby Jesus that those things are all run by large corporations. I mean we can all agree that they all run their businesses smart and efficiently, right?
Or are we all at a news site who’s existence seems to be that in the midst of sooooooo many companies that couldn’t think or innovate themselves out of a paper bag, one company, and only one that I can think of, does things right so often that it leaves everyone intrigued.
Okay, so with these patents, could apple please start sueing everyone? because I’m tired of hearing about ripoffdroid from google’s copy goggles… and that touch mouse developed in microsoft’s top of the line copy machine….
SUE SUE SUE 😀 😀 😀
So thetech you’re veiwing this now with could be 4-5 years old…
“…one company, and only one that I can think of, does things right so often that it leaves everyone intrigued. —@think
Actually, Apple does things right so often that many people (as well as many companies) resent Apple for showing what poor performers most of their competitors really are. Without Apple, everyone else could just keep cranking out the same old crap year after year, and consumers could keep buying the same old crap as though it was worth buying. Apple makes everyone look bad… depending on how you look at it.
