Verizon Wireless to roll out cheaper smartphone data plan

Apple Online Store“Verizon Wireless expects to roll out a cheaper data plan for smartphone buyers next week, as the largest U.S. carriers cut prices to lure new users to high-powered phones,” Roger Cheng reports for The Wall Street Journal.

“The new plan from Verizon Wireless will let customers get data service for $15 a month, down from $30 a month currently, but will limit them to 150 megabytes, a person familiar with the matter said. Customers who exceed the monthly limit will be charged extra,” Cheng reports. “The $30 plan, which the person said will remain available, offers unlimited data.”

“The move shows that even retailers of fast-selling smartphones can’t ignore the frugal mood of U.S. consumers in their effort to drum up growth,” Cheng reports. “AT&T Inc., exclusive U.S. carrier of Apple Inc.’s iPhone, began offering a $15, 200-megabyte plan this summer in part to attract new smartphone users.”

Cheng reports, “The new $15 Verizon Wireless plan will be available on Oct. 28 for new customers, and requires a two-year contract. Existing customers have the option of moving to the less expensive option, or keeping their current plan… Under the new plan, Verizon customers who exceed 150 megabytes—which amounts to roughly 900 webpages or five hours of streaming music a month—will be charged 10 cents per megabyte.”

It amazes me that people think they should be able to download movies on their iPhone. Many people in north America lack access to dsl or cable Internet at home, but others can’t be bothered to wait until they have a wifi connection. No offense, but you don’t have my sympathy.

  2. First of all, $30 for unlimited isn’t unlimited, The cap is 5GB. (How they legally get away with using the term unlimited is beyond me) So if you do the math; $30 for 5 GB = $0.006/MB vs. $15 for 150 MB = $0.10/MB. These companies aren’t trying to lure customers with lower data charges, they’re trying to force overages to make a TON of money. Oh BTW, here is a Ferrari that is capable of 200mph, but if you go over 20mph it’ll cost a sh!$ load of money. If you have a smart phone and don’t use 150MB of data a month then why do you need or want a smartphone?

Point well taken. Slight correction to your post. We actually Stream movies to the phone and not download via 3G. Nevertheless, I do not think that either she or I will be doing that on an everyday basis. Moreover the major point is that 150-250 mb plans are a complete waste of time and serve as nothing more than a way to make more money from the Telcos. I really don’t think it’s possible to live on 200mb of data and own an iPhone. Maybe 3 years ago when everything was WAP, but not now.

As for Netflix streaming, Pandora listening and other over-the-top ventures, it’s all relative what you can and can’t do. If you’ve got it, use it.

  6. Unless you’re in a wifi area all day these plans won’t cut it. I agree with Rick… My Sirius xm daily usage, traveling and using my sling box will tear through 1.5 to 3gb when I travel. I hope this battery holds up over two years.
Wife was on 200. That lasted 1 month! Soooo pissed I changed her grandfathered plan of the real unlimited. Went to 200MB, tried to go back to unlimited…. “no soup for you” AT&T told me!
