Apple files patent-infringement lawsuit against Nokia in UK

“Apple Inc. said it filed a patent- infringement lawsuit against Nokia Oyj in the U.K., part of a broader fight between the companies over smartphone technology,” Susan Decker and Diana Ben-Aaron report for Bloomberg

“A copy of the complaint, filed yesterday in the U.K. High Court of Justice Chancery Division, wasn’t immediately available,” Decker and Ben-Aaron report. “Kristin Huguet, an Apple spokeswoman, said the case is related to patent-infringement claims that Apple lodged against Nokia in December in the U.S.”

Decker and Ben-Aaron report, “In court filings in December and February, Apple claimed Nokia was seeking to force Apple into surrendering access to proprietary technology that differentiates the iPhone. Apple said it doesn’t want to license its iPhone-related patents to competitors. The new case is Apple Inc. v. Nokia Corp., HC10CO3053, High Court of Justice, Chancery Division (London).”

Not everyone decries suits against Apple when they are warranted. Apple does not have a history of blatantly stealing patented ideas. Most of the suits against Apple reported on MDN are those filed by patent whores that find some vague 20 year old “idea” patent that never generated a product. These are people trying to get rich quick. Where Apple actually violates a demonstrably valid patent, they should step up and pay.

On the other hand, Apple has a painful history of seeing its products copied left and right to their ultimate damage in the market. Jobs declared at the introduction of the iPhone that it was heavily patented and that they were going aggressively enforce those patents. After seeing dozens of knockoffs of the iPhone and iOS I, for one, have been wondering where that aggressive enforcement of the claimed patents has been. I experienced the marginalization of the Mac throughout the ’90’s, and know first hand what it can do to the development of the platform. I don’t want to see history repeat itself with iOS products. I want Apple to retain its market leadership because it benefits me. Competition is good some say, but only when competition is based on innovation and improvement, not duplication.

Android, WebOS, Meebo, etc. are going to have to prove that they brought their products to market without copying the patented elements of iOS and iPhone, and I’m good with that.

I’d really like to see a good analysis on the many patents in play, and how the competitors either got around them or may be in trouble.

  5. iMadMac2,
Claims are cheap, (just watch: I own 500 copies of Vista, as a mater Of fact I designed Vista, yeah that’s the ticket, I was the major software architect and designed Vista and it’s service pack Windows7, well, me and my wife…Morgan Fairchild)
On the other hand attitude speaks volumes, your says sad little MS fanboy hanging out on a Mac new site trying to be annoying. More pathetic than annoying though.

  7. @imadmac2,

“All you fanbois just love when Apple files suit then rant your heads off when Apple gets sued. “

The mark of a true troll or ms fanboy…. use the word fanboy (bois ??) when talking about Apple.. It proves you just do not know.

Pad 3G – 23″ Cinema Display – Time Capsule – 2 AirPort Expresses – Final Cut Express – Logic Express”

Anyone who really and actually owns that many Apple products actually knows how good they are and how bad the competition really is. Anyone can say that they own lots of stuff, owning and using it is different.

And @Sparks, right on. And if anyone knows the truth behind Apple, knows that they are not stupid. I believe that they tried to purchase the Nokia patents use like every other Cell maker but Nokia wanted Apple to pay way more than anyone else , so Apple said no, that is not how the law works.

    Just a thought here.
