HP’s forthcoming Windows 7 slate leaks (with video)

A video that appears to be of HP’s forthcoming Windows 7 tablet has been leaked, or trial-balooned, via YouTube:

MacDailyNews Take: If this is the real deal and they actually release that piece of crap, HP’s in even more disarray than we suspect. The only thing Apple has to fear from HP’s Windows 7 tablet is death by excessive laughter.

  1. Ok so all they did was take the Win7 OS (which supports touch screen application) and put it in a smaller touch screen form? That’s it? Why? Why do they think that this will pull users away from the UX that is the iPad?

Total waster of effort and another example of why companies like hp just don’t freaking get it.

  3. @ JT, so right. They will get murdered.

This is a joke. My guess is HP realizes this, but they need to “get something in the game” until they can turn their new WebOS into a real tablet product. Very short-term thinking — releasing a crappy product in the mean time thinking it will somehow get them ahead.

I’ve used Windows 7 on a touch-based PC, and it is nothing like the experience on an iPad. It’s much better suited for kiosk-like applications.

  5. @ theloniousMac

Don’t be fooled by the way IE operates. The app doesn’t render the page until it can render the whole thing, as opposed to drawing in sections as they come like other browsers do. Look at it from the time he actually makes the click, not just the all-at-once refresh.

Wow, I watched the video again. This thing is a complete catastrophe. At lease Android learned something and copied it from the iPad, like how to operate a keyboard and that FREAKING PULLDOWN MENUS are a lousy idea on a touch device.

    (sigh)

If it’s real… well, I like their strategy.
    I like it a lot.

  7. LMAO…good god! I lost it the minute I saw the iPhone being used to document this. Priceless!

When will these people get it? You cannot stuff a golf ball into a garden hose! The Windows UI is NOT FIT FOR A FACKIN’ TABLET! Good grief! Seriously…need to rotate the darn thing to find the right button…TOO MANY!

  9. Using a touchscreen to control a cursor with your finger shows the unmatched sheer ingenuity and genius of Windows 7 tablet edition.

Why didn’t Apple think of this? Also the cntl-alt-del button can be used for rebooting after installing the latest spyware and antivirus definitions. Very handy.

  11. Desktop OS’s are not touch screen friendly because people’s fingers are fat and clumsy. They really need bigger on screen targets, icons etc.

What I suspect HP will use Palm OS for is a more finger friendly interface on top of Windows 7 for most user level functions like writing, email, picture and music management.

However if one needs to use Office or any other Windows 7 program, then Win 7 is right there under the hood but a stylus will be needed to gain the fine screen control those programs require.

The advantage of the HP Tablet will have is the fact that the user will be able to run whatever program they wish, just like a normal computer. Likely Virtualbox and other VM software will work too.

In fact I suspect Ubuntu will be releasing a speedy Tablet version of their OS so one could rip that Windows 7 garbage right off the HP tablet.

OS X on a HP tablet is certainly a possibility too, through dubious channels of course.

  13. The cameras are a problem too. There are several work environments, like court, that will not allow cameras. I am sure Apple will have one the in the next iPad, however they will have to keep a model without them. The camera will keep them out of the enterprise market, one that HP nows rules in.

He did not show any apps running on it. It would to see how Word preform. That would be a real test on how this is better than an iPad. It would be nice to see what the processor is and the battery life.
