“While suspicions have been raised that Apple would at least have a front camera for FaceTime support, the researcher believed that it would have both front and back cameras,” Electronista reports. “The finished devices would arrive sometime in 2011, Kumar said.”

  1. That doesn’t really make sense. Shrinking everything down is going mess up UI’s for existing apps (changing the threshold of what’s too small to see / touch), or force developers to support another screen size. I don’t think there is nearly enough benefit to a 7-in iPad to justify the platform fragmentation.

  2. I can believe the front-facing camera rumor (in fact, that’s what I’m holding out for). But I doubt the seven-inch iPad story, and a rear facing lens would create a somewhat unwieldy camera on the existing iPad.

  3. My mother also said Apple is introducing a new spaceship capable of scooping of that dumbass from Kenyan and getting him out of our gravitational pull. Rumor has it they will take asswipe Jimmy Carter with them.

  4. Okay, dual cams on a 7-inch is okay but I can’t really ever see a cam on the back of a 10-inch iPad. I mean, who’s going to hold that sucker up and walk around? It’s goofy enough when I do it with an iPhone4.

  5. I would add the dual cams just so everyone will whining about it. But, no one is going to use the backside cam. Adding a 7 inch version would be great. I would buy 2 for my kids.

  6. No way they would make a 7″ iPad. What would be the point. For small ultra-portible you have the iPhone, the 10″(ish) size is perfect for traveling and working on email. Front facing camera, other than AT&T connectivity, and a Retina Screen with even better battery life and they will sell another gazillion of them.

  7. 7″ iPad sounds dumb to me. Why? To follow Samsung? It’s too big to be a phone and not big enough to truly differentiate it from an iPhone. Are you supposed to carry it around with you?

    I just don’t get the 7″ size

  8. Apple can’t keep up with demand for the current model, so it’s going to add a smaller one? Don’t think so. The iPad is the perfect size, and magazine subscriptions haven’t really even started yet.

Forward-facing camera, yes; no need/use for a rear-facing one. It’s too big to be a snapshot camera.

  9. While I would relish the cameras on a new ipad, a smaller screen size is not something that I would want. I like the current screen size as it allows me to browse without having to resize thing in order to read them.

Screen size is one of the reason why I wouldn’t be interested in purchasing a Galaxy Tab for personal use.

  10. I’d go for a 7″ iPad – hold comfortably in one hand size and weight.

Apple can be best in the market with a single device (iPhone). But to dominate a market (like it did with iPods) it needs a range competing at pricepoints. It already has a 10″ iPad, 3.5″ iPod Touch, so a 7″ should give it an impressive line-up.

  11. It would be cool if Apple created a Bluetooth camera accessory for use with iPad. It would have the following advantages.

+ You could point “front,” “back,” and anywhere in between – no fixed camera direction.
+ Does not take up valuable space inside iPad (or consumer iPad’s power), and you only need ONE camera.
+ For FaceTime, no need to hold, aim, and steady your iPad with both hands during the entire chat.
+ Place on table (or anywhere) for the best possible stationary camera angle, independent of iPad’s orientation or motion.
+ Clip it somewhere on your clothes (or your cap) for a hands free video camera.
+ Compatible will ALL iPads that have already been sold.
+ Also compatible with iPhones and iPod touches. Probably would need the processor that was in the iPhone 3GS and previous iPod touch, or current A4. Even if the device already has a built-in camera, a separate Bluetooth camera may be useful.
+ Also compatible with Macs, useful for the same reason.
+ In the future, compatible with Apple TV, although current model does not have Bluetooth.
+ Maybe the camera could have a direct-connect USB option for connecting to the Dock Connector port (and the mystery USB port on Apple TV).

There are already Bluetooth cameras for computers, so it should be feasible. If Apple doesn’t do it, some third party should do it.

  12. I’d wait until I can compare iPad 2″ 9.7″ to this rumored 7″ before I make a decision. I’m definitely going to get one. The current iPad does seem a little big and heavy for extended use holding it in one hand although I’d be happy with one as well. I think the 7″ one makes sense. It’ll still be way bigger than the iPhone.

  13. Some of you make the argument that a 7-inch iPad is unlikely because Apple (and developers) would need deal with a different screen resolution. If they keep the same screen resolution (1024×768) and compress it from 10-inch to 7-inch, the argument is that human fingers do not get smaller so Apple would not do it. I disagree…

With the current iPad, its pixel density is 132 pixels per inch (PPI). On the original iPhone through 3GS, the pixel density is 163 PPI. The iPhone 4 is double at 326 PPI, but the overall GUI design did not change; everything just became twice as sharp with the Retina Display.

Therefore, on the current iPad, on-screen elements are displayed slightly larger than on an iPhone, because the pixels are larger. Also, if you look at the home screen, app icons are spaced farther apart, compared to iPhone’s screen. So things are drawn slightly larger and GUI elements generally have more space in between.

If you go from 9.7 inches to 7.8 inches and keep the screen resolution of 1024×768, that PPI number becomes 163 PPI (matching iPhone). A “7-inch” iPad does not go too much smaller. It would NOT become less usable and human fingers that work fine with iPhones would have absolutely NO problem using a 7-inch iPad with a screen resolution of 1024×768.

Personally, I think it is most likely that for 2011, there will only be the current 10-inch size, and Apple will use the refresh to refine the current design. Make it thinner and lighter, with increased battery life. Increase RAM to 512mb. Perhaps increase the high-end storage option. Maybe add the user facing camera for FaceTime.
