“A number of early Droid X adopters are documenting serious graphical or possibly electrical problems with the handset’s giant screen,” Sean Hollister reports for Engadget.
“While we don’t know how widespread the issue might be quite yet, symptoms include rapid flickering and vertical banding over all or part of the 4.3-inch LCD,” Hollister reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Even when they work, all of these screens look like shit next to iPhone 4’s Retina display.
That’s the fact, Jack!
Don’t worry, I’m sure Motorola has a plan in the works. They will provide every user a screen bumper that will cover it up so you don’t have to look at the piece of crap.
A gadget with problems? Dammmmit call the lawyers, the media, the government, the aliens!!!!!! Wwaaaahhhhh !!!!!!!!
Will we see an iP4-like media feeding frenzy? I doubt it. Hypocrites.
Uh, any letters from Senators?
But do their antenna’s work?
Quick, call up CR!!!!!
When will the blowhard Schumer ask for this to be corrected? Nothing else to keep him busy these days…
I wonder if that problem can be avoided if you just hold it another way. Maybe Verizon should hold a press conference and give out free iPhones to compensate for the problem.
Uh Oh!
We will not see any negatives re Droids in the press or on TV news. Last night SF local CBS station had a fellow showing how big and beautiful the screen is. Finally an iPhone killer he indicated, and also on Verizon so you can actually complete a call. Leno had another dig last night at iPhone 4 saying that too bad Mel Gibson didn’t use one then he couldn’t have made those calls to his girlfriend. Only iPhone and Apple get the constant attention of the news. Good or bad it is everywhere.
@GreggThurman
Off course not, they didn’t sell 3 million in a month.
The iPhone 4 can display anything you like. Bloodbath?
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
Let’s see the press jump on this one. Won’t happen. Where’s the 2 face, lying Schumer on this one, oh wait I think I see him in the Apple Store buying an IPhone 4.
RECALL!!!!
Screengate?!
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
To all you political wankers out there: hold it another way.
I know what the problem is… it’s the antenna getting in the way!

Perhaps, if one has paid over £500 for it. When a consumer spends money on an item it is not unreasonable to expect it to work satisfactorily out the box.
Do I have to buy the phone first or can I just start acting like Motorola and Google OWES ME big time!? WHY ARE THEY TAKING SO LONG TO FIX THIS . . . don’t they know that a very good friend of mine was thinking about buying the phone and it might have THE (insert correct problem) big problem. Why have they DONE NOTHING?
Just hold the phone at a different angle. lol….AHAHAHAHAHA
Of course this won’t get as much attention, just like it didn’t get as much attention when it was announced.
Apple, for good and for bad, are in the media’s eye more than any other tech company. When the launch of a phone is huge news its only fair that the associated problems are also big news. Nobody is picking on Apple – they are just the hot topic
Consumer Reports saw this and exclaimed, “Looks like Droid has thousands of apps you can scroll through. Recommended!”
Let’s apply the same logic the Press applies to Apple issues… Let’s recall this product now! This issue only apply to a limited number of people. That doesn’t matter, recall this product now!
It looks fine to me…hehe
I am dubbing this: SCREENGATE
Does your smartphone screen distort like that- DroidX does.
Why bother posting that useless video?
Pics would have served the cause better…
That’s not a defect, that’s interference from a nearby iPhone attenuated attenae…..!
Oh my God!!! Call Congress!! Sue Steve jobs!! Report it to the FCC!! Does Obama know about this??!?!?!? What the hell are we gonna DOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fut the shuck up, that’s what.
Oh- and for all the Opensource people… check this out…

Life does indeed come full circle- doesn’t it.
Just squint your eyes. Works for me.
Wow, try to ask questions at phandroid.com and watch them delete you. Oh well.
I don’t see the big deal… It looks like it the “vertical hold” knob just needs a little twist…
Or perhaps the tracking just isn’t adjusted right.
Let’s be fair. We need to know how many of these phones Motorola has produced, and how many reports of this problem exist.
I’m waiting for a Consumer Reports report on this…..
SCREENGATE!
“When will the blowhard Schumer ask for this to be corrected? Nothing else to keep him busy these days…”

These aren’t the Droids you’re looking for….

Looks like the droid X will be successful they’ll kill it
I have both an iPhone 4 and a Droid X. Although I am a die hard apple fan, I must admit the droid is a nice phone. The larger screen is a nice novelty. Verizon 3G and coverage absolutely destroys AT&T on Long Island. The iPhone 4 screen resolution is unmatched, although the Droid is nice too. IOS 4 is a gorgeous and smooth OS. The droid is clunky at times. The apple app store is better quality than Android marketplace, and iTunes is unmatched as well. The Droid X is a great phone, with a eye catching display. The iPhone though is still the king. If you want the smoothest OS with best high resolution screen, then go for iPhone. If you want a top notch network, nice large screen, and can deal with some clunkiness, then go for Droid X. Competition is great. We all win in the end
It’s not a bug, it’s a feature. Looks to me like that wobbly screen can be used with some new 3D glasses for an experience that whips the shit out of this so called “Retina Display”.
Thank you Google. Always thinking ahead to provide your end users with the best possible experience. Errr… wait, that’s not your goal… you’re in advertising. Silly me, how quickly I forget. Someone help me out here… what’s the name of that computer/consumer electronics company that actually cares about its customers? I think it starts with an A…
So where’s the Engadget DroidX freaks moaning about the iPhone and its issues? Come out Come out wherever you are, you perfection driven sycophants. Why aren’t ya boasting now?
B**ches.
And where is the class action suit against MOT’s claim that the screen resolution were 800*480 pixels? In their screens, each what-they-call-pixel has only 2 instead or 3 colours. That means the real resolution is only about 653*392 pixels.
(factor (2/3)^(1/2) in each direction)
Where is Sen. Schumer when we need him??
non-issue. just don’t look at it that way.
DROID X FIX!
1. pick up droid x.
2. Drop in 33 gal. Trash barrel
3. Stick leg in trash barrel.
4. Stomp, stomp, stomp.
5. Run, not walk to nearest apple store.
6. Purchase iPhone.
7. Problem fixed.
The harsh treatment given to Apple is not being, so far anyway, meted out to Motorola. Listen to this one tech blogger:
“This is being handled in the right way it seems. There’s a fault on the phone, you take it back to the store and get a replacement as soon as stock is available. You can do that when the fault is only on a small percentage of your phones and not an issue with all of them like Apple is facing.
Still, Motorola is not doing itself any favors shipping phones with a screen problem, but now was probably the best time for such an issue to happen as so much attention is on iPhone 4.”
OK. Taking it back to the store” is the “right way” to handle an issue like this, but Apple didn’t let you “take it back”? WRONG
Also, I’d rather have a phone with a sensitive spot and an easy solution (iPhone 4) than an unusable brick with no replacement in sight until weeks from now. How angry would you be?
Finally that comment about “now is a good time to have an embarrassing failure, because Apple is in the limelight” is so revealing. The Droid fans know that no phone is perfect and are glad the iPhone’s only minor flaw is hogging the media’s pea-sized attention span.
@ rosswell
> The harsh treatment given to Apple…
Now that the “smart money” is back in AAPL (they were buying all day today), you can expect that the media and analysts will reverse their “antennagate” coverage (starting right now). They will now say it was not a big deal after all, or that Apple has taken the appropriate actions. CR may even “recommend” iPhone 4 again, and give some lame reason for the change. This, along with today’s quarterly results, will help push AAPL price back up to around $300 in the near term.
This is forgivable for CR and the anti-Apple press I suppose, whereas an easily fixable tiny flaw in the iPhone is not. I have not seen the Droid X but I’ve seen all the other Droids and HTCs and next to the iPhone retina screen they all look like doo-doo.
Is this a broken design or a broken phone? If a broken design, like the iPhone antenna, they have to fix it. They MUST. Or they can give folks their money back and recall the lot of them. As this is Motorola, they might find a couple other options to try before they give up.
The real test of a PHONE is in the making of a call. That works? Fine. These smart phones, though, are expected to do so much in addition that just being able to make a call is not enough. If my screen on my Stupid Phone acted that way, though, I’d be ripped.
Don’t know what the big deal is, it just needs a vertical hold knob, my tv from 20 years ago had one.

But do their antenna’s work?
Depends on what you mean by work buster… the internal antenna is in the top of the phone so the proximity attenuation (from your hand “gorilla gripping”) is lower but on the other hand when you actually use the phone as a phone your brain gets that “extra dose” of microwaves (proximity is very important here as well as RFEM follows the inverse square rule (RFd=1/p2)
New studies have also pointed it (microwave radiation from phones) not being great for you cornea as well.
This can be minimized by not putting the antenna in the top of the phone, but you get into the gorilla grip attenuation thing….
As I have said before, I doubt moto’ could get that phone approved in the EU (where stricter standards for cooking your brain with a cell phone exist)
I am so sorry to say this but… There is no bumper case to fix this problem

WOO! Open source RULES!!!
Don’t worry, this is just a cool feature of the android OS. This is exclusive to Motorola. We are calling it Glitch time.
Just another way we are making our OS easier to use for everyone.
Enjoy Android

Bwaaaaaaa-ha-ha-ha-ha! Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Sorry.
Perfectly understandable, it’s a first revision on the design, just give them time to work it out. Now about that AWFUL iPhone 4 antenna issue…
/doublestandard (that is, i’m not being serious guys, put the torches and pitchforks down!)
Incidentally, I was at the Apple store yesterday for the first time since I got my ipad camera kit, and quick checked out the iPhone 4. That screen is incredible, and I couldn’t get the bars to drop.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
My Droid X was by far the worst phone that I have used in 10 years. The speaker first began to sound like voices were being transmitted through a “tin can” and the speaker continued to get worse. Today the phone became unresponsive and would not allow me to end a call. The screen would not migrate away from a black blank screen (I can assure you that the screen was unlocked). Touching the screen, pressing the home page button, or pressing the power button did nothing. The only way to end a call was to remove the battery and re-start the phone. All other phone calls from the phone took an exceptionally long time to connect to a cell tower (about 1 minute with 3-4 bars of signal). I can safely say that I am happy to have the Droid X out of my life. It is on a truck being shipped back to the factory where it should stay. I am truly dissappointed with Motorola, and waiting up until 12:01 Thursday morning was not worth the trouble.
This Droid X screengate issue is just like a B-grade movie. Nobody is going to pay any attention to Motorola, a has-been company with a chequered history. So boring!
But when it comes to Apple, every paparazzo, every blogger, every print media practitioner, every TV station, every click devil, every podcaster and every Apple-haters want to have a piece of the action. Even senators are known to bolster their popularity with a dash of Apple sauce. Every production on Apple is guaranteed to be a first-run smasher.
This is what happens when you buy a fake iPhone…
Nah! Must be seeing things, just an optical illusion. Droid is good yah!
