Probably iTunes 10.0 (or “X”). iTunes originated from SoundJam MP, which was an third-party program Apple bought even before Mac OS 9 was out. Starting out as a Mac OS 9 “juke box” and music ripper program, it grew from there to add support for iPods, the iTunes Store, podcasts, video content, iPhones, the App Store, iPads, etc… iTunes is Apple’s Microsoft Office.

It is probably being re-written from the ground up for the next major release, which will be 64-bit. Not that iTunes will benefit too much from being 64-bit, unless there are going to be 4GB+ video downloads soon.

good summary. I was a SoundJam user before iTunes and have used every single version of iTunes since the OS9 days. I have also converted our substantial music library to an NAS and use iTunes to manage the collection.
iTunes desperately needs to be more memory-capable and, yes, snappier.
If your music library is comprised primarily of AIFF and Apple Lossless files and especially if you listen to well-crafted music (as opposed to sub 3-minute crap that is entirely based on single-chord hooks the labels generally spew out today), then the lagginess of the old/bloated iTunes code is really discouraging.
When i’m downloading it it keeps freezing and then not responding. Is the only thing running on my computer. GAH!!!
Maybe Apple should rename iTunes to iSync.
ended the download because it froze and now all the music and stuff in my iTunes library is gone. I’m not liking this.

Hmm. iTunes does seem to have a growing tendency to try to do everything. It’s gradually taking over the job of the file system. I’m really not sure it is the most efficient or best written application to take on this role. Feature creep and bloatware spring to mind. Very un-Apple like…

I have written Feedback to numerous times regarding iTunes. I think they should revert iTunes back to a simple Music player, and have a separate App for iPhone/iPod/iPad management (a bit like iPhone Configuration Utility for Enterprise), and a separate App for Movies, Apps and Books.
I have to agree with the posters above, iTunes is becoming a jack of all trades, master of none. Even the name doesn’t really make sense anymore, because it’s not just Music, it’s Apps, Films, TV Shows, Books…
My itunes 9.2 freezes during sync/backup.
