MacDailyNews Take: With a screen that’s just one-fourth the size of Apple’s iPad, this looks to be beleaguered Dell’s try at an “iPod touch killer.” Apparently, Dell will attempt to bore iPod touch to death.
Streak cause they were caught with their pants down…
The only streak Dell’s had since Michael Dell put his foot in his mouth, is it’s mammoth loosing streak.
So the 5″ model is the Streak, will the 7″ be called the Turd?
So, you know, I really like his professional speaking style, you know. It’s so, you know easy to follow his train of thought you know.
How about calling it the Skidmark?
They actually list a removable battery as a key feature.
People don’t want to carry around multiple batteries and a charger. Although I guess when you have 20 minutes per charge, it’s necessary. People want a battery that lasts all day, at least.
Are they doing this product because the Dell Digital DJ and Ditty were such successes?
Yeah? And when has any product we’ve derided been a success? Seriously, when?
I’m drawing a blank here.
It’s not our fault that Apple’s would-be competitors have sustained a 99%* failure rate at actually competing with Apple. And just because we can see their latest failures coming from a mile away(i.e., Dell Streak), which isn’t very impressive because anybody with a little common sense could, we’re accused of mindlessly bashing anything without an Apple logo on it?
Lame.
* I’m feeling generous today.
TowerTone,
That was the best one in a long time!!!
To our friends in the UK. I know Mr. Dell is about to inflict you with this dodgy iPad imposter. For the record, regardless of Mr. Dell’s actions: Americans do not think that the people in the UK are stupid.
just my $0.02
Watched the video and was wondering if Steve Jobs can sue that guy, Kevin Andrew, for plagiarism!
What did Kevin do, cliff note Steve Jobs iPad introduction speech?!
Nice to see some originality… NOT!
a class of device that fits between your smartphone and a fullnetbook or laptop…
for the device to succeed it needs to be really good at a couple of things, it needs to do certain activities better than anything else to justify its existence…
do things on the go like… same listing as Jobs had for iPad…
Hmmm, where have I heard ALL of this before??? I know I’ve heard it somewhere…
Dell, trying to compete with a two-year-old iPod touch. And failing…
@splashman RE Apple 5″ device “Not a chance in hell. If you believe that rumor, you have no business commenting on Apple.”
It was taken for what it was a rumo(u)r. About what? 30% of stories about apple turn out to be true would be my guess. This one was based on Digitimes looking at component sourcing. Both AppleInsider, and this esteemed website, deemed the story to have sufficient credibility, to reproduce it, neither adding a ‘we think it unlikely take’. Maybe they have no business …
The wisdom or folly will be proved by the market. I don’t think anyone expects it to sell like the the iPad or iPhone. But that’s not to say it won’t be a success i.e. a profitable product for Dell.
I just think it is a good move for Dell to step into the space in between iPad and smartphones, rather than competing directly with the iPad. It gives them – for a while – a unique format, and presumably it will be cheaper. PC makers have never competed well with apple top end, but have enjoyed success (at thin margins) – in the budget space below.
@@kevt Duh! The Windows PC! Pain in the backside, but it’s proved extremely successful.
Here’s an opinion piece from PCworld: Dell Streak Has Potential, But Misses the Tablet Mark
Here’s the money ‘graph:
“Android has tremendous potential for providing the foundation for a formidable iPad competitor, and the Dell Streak has impressive hardware specs which–if you ignore the diminutive display–also compete favorably with the iPad. Unfortunately, I am still left feeling like the Streak is a smartphone, and not a tablet.”
If people were wondering where the market is for the iPad, they’re going to be seriously scratching their heads about the Streak.
@kevt, it’s one thing to report that a rumor exists. That’s all fine and dandy. It’s another thing entirely to support your point (Streak has a market) with that rumor, as that implies you believe it (why else support your point with it?).
As I said, neither you nor I know how the Streak will do, just as we didn’t know how the iPad would do. There was no existing market for the iPad (8×10 tablet), just as there is no market for the Streak (5″ smartphone/tablet). Apple took a risk, and we now know their risk paid off. I contend that the Streak, with little differentiation from a more-portable and just-as-capable smartphone, has less chance of succeeding (i.e., significant sales beyond technophiles) than the iPad. If you disagree, I’m all ears — explain why.
Few Windows PCs even have profit margins worth mentioning anymore, and Apple owns about 90% of the only market segment that’s still making money(computers over $1000).
Plus Mac sales keep skyrocketing, so yeah. I honestly don’t think Windows PCs are even competing right now.
Take Dell.
They sell overwhelmingly more hardware than Apple does, but Apple is worth at least 8x more than Dell. Competition: zilch.
The rest aren’t doing much better.
The worst part of this whole crap-tastic video?
Check out that poor dude’s man-bracelet!
I think that is a daring entry in the bling “space”.
MDN Pressure – As in what is on Dell and all the other box makers who are desperately trying to play catch up to the unstoppable iPad..
“So you can watch Pandora and search the web at the same time? Absolutely”
Why is everyone so obsessed with that!!! I MEAN SERIOUSLY!
Goodbye battery life with badly made multi-tasking!
Look for our new 7″ Skidmark and 10″ Shitstain coming later this year.
Just like the streaker’s fad in 1970, the Dell’s Steakers will grab momentary notoriety but will fade out like a shooting star. What a funny name for a tablet!
Picked up mine today and it is fantastic! IT isn’t too large to be a phone and isn’t too small to be a tablet, it is spot on. It is a hell of an experience browsing in such perfect size. We are all too used to small screens and not being able to properly browse the web that we think it is the norm to have such small devices.
If you had never seen a web phone before this would be the perfect size you would want from a screen as it sits nicely in one or two hands.
My one and only issue is that Android won’t orientate the home screen to portrait, every app does just not the home screen.
Not got any regrets, everyone wants a phone that is versatile but with the class of an iphones software and design and this is the closet I’ve ever experienced.
