Justin Long: Apple’s ‘Get a Mac’ commercials ‘might be done’

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“For a decade, Justin Long has acted in commercials, TV shows, studio features, and independents, many comedies and a few dramas. He’s also done more than his share of voice work for animated fare… Long recently spoke to The A.V. Club about his desire to test himself in a rare dramatic role, the trick to doing voiceover work, and the uncertain future of the Mac ads,” Scott Tobias reports for The A.V. Club (AVC).

AVC: what’s the status on those Apple commercials?
Justin Long: You know, I think they might be done. In fact, I heard from John, I think they’re going to move on. I can’t say definitively, which is sad, because not only am I going to miss doing them, but also working with John. I’ve become very close with him, and he’s one of my dearest, greatest friends. It was so much fun to go do that job, because there’s not a lot to it for me. A lot of it is just keeping myself entertained between takes, and there’s no one I’d rather do it with than John.

  1. I think they should continue with the ads – it works, market share is growing, opinions are changing, etc. Perhaps mix in some new ads also, or choose to do only a few of the “I’m a mac” style per year… but keep doing them. One of the great things about using a mac is the consistent user interface across all the different software, and all the different OS permutations. Consistency of some sort in the ad would also help to convey this… and could be a focus of a new round of ads. No need to relearn everything you know because you try a new bit of software or upgrade to the new OSX version – where on a PC, well, god only knows what will change….

  2. One additional benefit of these commercials was the comedy that came from the MS camp to try and counter them. From Seinfeld to laptop hunters, they were legendary fail.

  3. Bring ’em back when the deluge of iPad MS copycats come out. Catch PC playing with iPad, I don’t know, or continually punching his PC-tablet wannabe while Mac gets ’em dinner reservations.

    But probably Apple’s broader acceptance will negate the argument for the ‘switch’ campaign.

    Or at least that’s the way King Jobs probably sees it.

  4. Here’s an idea for the finale:

    “Hi, I’m a Mac.”

    “And I’m amok.” (Throws a chair, does a monkey waddle, etc.)

    “Er, the memo said insanely great, not gratingly insane.”

  5. In a way, it’s good they ended it before it started getting stale. It was a very positive, creative series of ads. I loved almost all of them, though one or two were kind of boring. Great guys, great team. I wish them well.

  6. There is one commercial that HAS to be done. I have talked to so many PC slaves that are absolutely CLUELESS that they can run Windows software on a Mac by simply installing the proper Microsoft OS on to it as well.

    There is a HUGE market share of people who are afraid to part with their software that could then be won over if they simply knew that they could have the best of both worlds… simultaneously!

    So the HAVE to do one last commercial that publicizes at which point John Hodgeman would simply get up and walk away muttering… “I’m done then… I’m done.”

    A Justin would turn to the camera and say… “Isn’t what I’ve been trying to tell you all these years…Get a Mac.”

    We would bury them once and for all…

  7. Filling in for the grammar police…

    @iworker
    You should be cognisant of this fact as well.

    Word spelling & usage = OK

    @Todd
