Apple sells over 300,000 Wi-Fi-only iPads on first day

Apple Online StoreApple today announced that it sold over 300,000 iPads in the US as of midnight Saturday, April 3. These sales included deliveries of pre-ordered iPads to customers, deliveries to channel partners and sales at Apple Retail Stores. Apple also announced that iPad users downloaded over one million apps from Apple’s App Store and over 250,000 ebooks from its iBookstore during the first day.

“It feels great to have the iPad launched into the world — it’s going to be a game changer,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, in the press release. “iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad.”

MacDailyNews Take: Apple’s off to a strong start: That’s roughly $180 million gross on Day One (during Easter weekend when people may have been traveling and/or too busy to go iPadding, no less) for the Wi-Fi-only iPad model (limit two per customer) not counting accessories and other ancillary (halo) sales. Now, let’s wait and see what happens after the first iPadders show off their devices to family and friends and when iPad 3G comes online later this month!

Apple’s “over 300,000” number includes deliveries of pre-ordered iPads to customers. This means that iPad 3G pre-orders are not included in the count.

In late March, we ran a poll that asked, “Will you buy an Apple iPad?” Of 1,194 responses, 35% said they’d buy a 3G iPad, 47% would buy a Wi-Fi iPad, and 18% were unsure or wouldn’t be buying. The detailed results:
• 22% – Yes, WiFi+3G 64GB $829 model
• 21% – Yes, WiFi-only 16GB $499 model
• 13% – Yes, WiFi-only 32GB $599 model
• 13% – Yes, WiFi-only 64GB $699 model
• 11% – No
• 07% – Yes, WiFi+3G 32GB $729 model
• 07% – Unsure
• 06% – Yes, WiFi+3G 16GB $629 model

This gives us at least some idea that there are a great number of iPad pre-orders not yet counted, not to mention a forthcoming sales burst when iPad 3G hits stores.

Have at the math!

So, how many today are waiting for iPad 3G? Let us know by taking our MacDailyNews Poll on the top left side of all pages of our “Classic” site.

MacDailyNews Note: Regarding some comments below, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster raised his estimates on Saturday to “between 600,000 and 700,000 units purchased on the first day.” This according to John Boudreau of The San Jose Mercury News. We’re not sure if Munster was including Wi-Fi and/or 3G iPad model pre-orders or not. If we had to guess, we’d expect an analyst to be looking at pegging total device sales (both iPad models including pre-orders), but that’s only a guess. If so, his estimate may be closer to reality than some seem to think. Gene?

  1. What’s interesting about this number is that it only includes saturday sales and pre orders. It does not include Sunday because apple stores were closed for Easter. In my mind, that is more impressive that the original iPhone, becasue that device went on sale at 6pm Friday night and had all day sat, and sun to achieve 270k units.

This is an impressive number for “one day.”

    Good job Apple!

  2. Fail. It was less than half of the predicted amount sold. Talk about an iFlop. You iSheep need to stop wasting your money. I’ll be waiting for the HP tablet that will totally destroy your iTampons and send Apple back to oblivion where it belongs.

  3. No one said how many they sold. It says “over” 300,000. Consider what “over” implies (anywhere from 300,000 and up). I doubt they have an exact number count yet.

  4. MDN take :: No Excuse. Apple picked Easter weekend…. Not us. If someone wants something they will go and get it. It does not matter if it is Easter!

Now your take makes it sound like iPad was an iFail and now your bringing the apps and accessories sold, and holiday into account. If Apple sold 600,000, you wouldn’t be discussing the holiday as an excuse for such a low number… Ps These numbers include pre-orders! That makes it even worse.

I give this thing 3 months only before people stop buying it. Guaranteed!

  5. @Mac-nugget
Re-read what I wrote. I never wrote anything about “nobody else wants one?” I used derivations of the “I” word. I’m an Apple investor and owned Mac’s exclusively since 1988. Read before commenting. Now, let’s get back to having fun.

  6. RE tpmchugh

If it was 350,000 they would have stated 350,000. Over 300,000 means they sold probably 300,004 units. Apple said they sold over 300,000… It’s coming from the horses mouth.

    It’s an iFail.

  7. What’s exponential and even more game-changing is a much new higher bar for the word “halo effect” When people lay their hands(fingers) on this, they just gotta have one. The talk turns the ears…the touch drives the stake.

  8. Unemployment effectively over 20% when the numbers aren’t rigged, folks worried about paying for Obama’s boondoggle of “health care” rationing, and they still sold “more than” 300,000. That’s not bad.

Hey Johnny, please post you real name and address so we can collect on your “guarantee” which really, nobody cares about.

And the “Apple stock holders” who clearly are greedy mothereffers need to learn about investing. A $500 product sells 300,000 units in a day and you’re WHINING? Seriously… get a grip. So your stock takes a hit for a few days because losers like you think 300,000 isn’t a successful launch… what? You’re too dense to grasp it will go up in the long term as the iPad sales numbers continue steady?

  9. Sandwiched between Good Friday and Easter on a very busy family-oriented weekend, the 1-day figure is EXCELLENT.

After the 3G is available sales will pick up. The iPad is NOT primarily a WiFi device. It will become an indispensable go-everywhere must have tool, and needs to be always-connected.

  10. Well, not all stores were closed Sunday. I’m figuring it was the ones in the malls. Here in Northern Virginia, that was the case (with the Fair Oaks and Tysons Apple stores closed). However, Reston (outside store, standalone), was open, with a line for iPad purchases, and the store was mobbed with people looking at the hardware. I was in line for 20 minutes, and out the door in 3, with a WiFi 64.

  11. Aww… @Johnny and @Playnice are trying to learn how to troll. Guys, you fail epically and doing so. Please grow a pair, get out of your mom’s basment, and then come back and try again.

    With Regards,
The People Who Actually Have A Pair

  12. I bought one for my daughter — first night she made an interesting observation — there were four of us looking at pictures of my grandson — in contrast to a laptop, where everyone would have huddled around the laptop, we were passing the iPad around – just like you’d do with printed pictures. As she said, the iPad is a much more collaborative device. I am also amazed at the speed of doing just about anything. The lack of blotted OS overhead is obvious. As soon as I get my arms around doing PHP in Filemaker, I see places for at least a half dozen iPads at work. The iPad has a rich future despite what the naysayers may say.

  13. I’m holding out for 2.0, but ILMAO over the anti-Apple crowd comments. APPLE NEVER PREDICTED ANY LEVEL OF SALES; only ONE independent analyst predicted an amount anywhere approaching 700,000.

Besides, is there any company in the world where sales of 300,000 units of one of its products in an 18-hour time span would be considered a fail by naysayers besides Apple?

  14. you people kill me that you actually put stock into what an analyst predicts, like they’re some kind of a fortune telling god. be your own person already and who gives an EFF how many were sold anyway?
by the way, how long did you wait in line for your Palm pre and Blackberry Storms…..idiots.

  16. Most stores were open for around 11 hours on Saturday.

225 stores (224 bricks + 1 online) sold over 300,000 units which is about 1350 units per store which averages out to an iPad being sold every 30 seconds or so which is probably as long as it takes to process the card transaction.

Give it until the new northern hemisphere school year in September and these things will walk out ten times quicker.

  17. That’s only Wifi only sales. They still have to release the 3G version.

Munster was the one who predicted 700K sales. I’m not sure he meant the whole product line or just this weekends sales.

Also note Apple said Sat midnight. They have not counts sales on Sunday even though the stores are open then.

What I’m surprised about is that the stock hasn’t tanked yet. Munster set everyone up for the fall.
