Apple renews Newton logo design trademark

Apple Online Store“When discovering Apple’s latest trademark filings for iBook and iBookstore in the Canadian Intellectual Property Office this week, I also stumbled upon Apple’s filing pertaining to their Newton logo design trademark that appears to have been renewed or has been automatically set to renew on October 13, 2010,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.

Purcher asks, “Hmm, considering that Apple has reinvented or repurposed their iBook trademark from that of a notebook to that which represents ebooks and an ebook store, could Apple be thinking of resurrecting or repurposing Newton for something meaningful once again?”

“Isaac Newton described the three laws of motion, developed a theory of color and formulated an empirical law of cooling while studying the speed of sound,” Purcher reports. “There’s certainly a lot of technology that Apple could apply this to – in respect to a future device – to ensure that Apple’s Newton goes down in history as a noteworthy success.”

  1. “Apple’s Newton Operating System 2.0 won Byte Magazine’s Best of Comdex-Fall ‘95 award in the operating system category.”

That’s the same year Windows 95 shipped. The Newton may have been mishandled but it was an extraordinary piece of gear for the time.

  2. There’s really nothing to see here, folks. Companies renew trademarks frequently. Given all the trademarks owned by Apple, this was probably part of a larger basket of trademark renewals.

It makes for a sexy headline, but little more. Evidence of a slow news week.

  3. It’s too bad the Newton name has such a negative connotation to it as far as it being considered a failure, and having never been able to shed the early jokes about it’s handwriting recognition. Otherwise I think iNewton would have been a great name instead of iPad. If for anything to avoid all the immature and moronic maxi pad jokes…

  4. They won’t use it again. Jobs tells a story about how, when he went back to Apple, he found a room full of old macs and other items and he got someone to throw them all out. I think his words were something along the lines of “Get this sh*t out of here”.

He has no sentimentality and won’t go back to something from the past. They’ll be renewing the trademark as a formality.

  5. Why not use the Newton trade mark for a hand recognition app. That was break thru stuff at the time and is what the Newton was notorious for. Just a thought? I know we tend to ignore the usefulness of hand writing for note taking, certainly as a student I would find it invaluable for my ipad ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  6. Considering Apples doing a great deal of R&D;into screen tech and registering patents as such; including light pens, light sensitive screens along with their multi-touch research I’d say they have something in the works. they’ll look at the market progress of iPad and the next gen iPhone [pocket computer]…. we’ll see.

  7. Still using Newton at trade shows when I need to draw pictures or schematics, and need things written in Chinese. There is about 12 years of history in it so iPhone can’t quite replace it yet.
